About

Nerding offers after-school STEM classes, summer STEM classes, and both online and in-person options that include specific topics like a 3D printing class and an Electric Invention Class. The program also features Nerd Showcase Fridays, where kids share what they have been working on. Online classes are run in small groups of no more than 8 students per class for 50 minutes each day, Monday through Friday.

• Ages: 6–13 years old
• Schedule: Summer camp classes run in June and July, with in-person options available Monday–Friday from 8:00am–4:30pm, and classes held in 50-minute sessions.
• Price: Save 10% on 4 or more classes, with discounted pricing available until March 31 through the Early Nerd Special.

All in-person and online classes are designed and taught by professional, certified teachers with at least 5 years of experience, strong classroom management skills, and a stated passion for STEM topics. Nerding uses an engaging, teacher-developed curriculum, keeps a low student-to-teacher ratio, and groups students thoughtfully by grade level. During online programs, building projects are designed to use materials from around the house so parents do not need to buy supplies online.

Nerding describes its mission as offering after-school and summer camp STEM classes for curious, creative, and inventive students in grades 1–7, with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and “making.” The program defines “Nerding” as the action of being a nerd and interested in STEM, and describes itself as powered by curiosity, creativity, grit, failure, and nerdiness. Owners Niecy and Micah lead the program; Niecy has taught 3rd and 4th grade in Arizona for 9 years and works as a tech guru, curriculum writer, maker, and “nerd whisperer,” while Micah is a business entrepreneur, musician, guitar teacher, and web and graphic designer.

Nerding began in the Arizona valley in 2014, starting with summer classes in a house in Chandler and later using a community room at Children’s Dental Village. Over the years it expanded into an after-school program, added more age groups and classrooms, and increased the number of teachers and classes. In 2020 the program pivoted to online classes due to the pandemic, returned to in-person classes with precautions in 2021, and has continued to run 5-week summer sessions, with registration open for summer 2024.

Parent and student comments describe the 3D printing class as “awesome” and “super cool,” mention that students were excited each day to share what they learned, and note that teachers are engaging and activities are creative. Several families report that their children have taken multiple classes, enjoyed the summer options, and that Niecy and Micah were helpful and informative when they called with questions.
