About

Camp Not-A-Wheeze integrates allergy and asthma education with recreational camp activities in a traditional camp setting. The program serves children with chronic lung disease or allergic conditions, including moderate to severe asthma and conditions such as EOE, atopic dermatitis, and food allergies. It also serves siblings of these children and offers a Counselors In Training (CIT) option for former campers who want to return as CITs.

• Ages: 7–17 years old
• Schedule: Camp dates are May 31–June 5, 2026.
• Price: $2,000 (Average) Saved Per Child After Going To An Asthma Camp

Camp Not-A-Wheeze is described as the premiere camp for children with asthma or allergic conditions in Arizona and surrounding areas and as a refuge for children living with chronic lung disease or allergic conditions. It is a recreational and educational program that has helped children ages 7–14 with moderate to severe asthma or allergic conditions learn effective management skills so they can lead active, healthy lives. The program’s stated mission includes providing an educational and recreational camp experience to which these children typically would not otherwise have access, increasing campers’ knowledge of asthma (including warning signs, triggers, medications, and self-management), providing resources for families, caregivers, and healthcare providers for more systematic and year-round asthma management, increasing campers’ self-esteem and their ability to experience a “normal” adolescence, and decreasing emergency room visits and school days missed due to asthma after their camp experience.

The camp serves 7–14 year old children with moderate to severe asthma or allergic conditions and their siblings, and welcomes campers ages 15–17 to apply to become CITs. Historically, a majority of these campers may not be accepted into other camps because of the constant monitoring, specialty foods, and medication requirements that are typically part of their disease management. The volunteer team states that 24-hour care is ready and available to support these children.

Medical volunteers are present throughout Camp Not-A-Wheeze in cabins with kids, accompanying kids to activities, teaching asthma education, and staffing the infirmary. These volunteers must be licensed medical professionals in order to attend, and the camp also utilizes students from medical programs and additional operational volunteers. The camp highlights its medical direction and physician volunteer team from Phoenix Children’s Hospital, who serve in the infirmary as the Camp Physicians.

After celebrating its 35th year of camp in 2023, the organization is marking 40 years as an organization and its 38th camp in 2026.
