ActivStars states that its mission is developing life skills for active youth and providing what youth and families need most beyond the classroom with positive recreation programs that build skills, friendship, family values, and character for life, with the mission to develop life skills through recreation, using the phrases “Sports for life” and “Life through sports.” In the 1950s, founder and family matriarch Bonnie Hood had a vision for offering quality and accessible youth programs for all young Americans. ActivStars is described as the leading US provider of affordable youth recreation programs for families with children ages 4–17 and as the first youth recreation program to partner directly with schools to offer high-quality, affordable after-school youth sports for ages 4 to 17. The organization is company-owned and operated rather than a franchise or volunteer recreation program, and it partners closely with schools, uses trained coaching staff, and focuses on teamwork, fun, safety, and friendship.
All instructors and coaches are hired locally within the community and must meet strict requirements for demonstrated knowledge and a commitment to training. All instructors and coaches are screened and fingerprinted as part of an extensive background and reference check process. As employees, they attend training sessions to learn ActivStars safety procedures and programs, current sports rules and regulations, innovative teaching techniques, and curriculum development. ActivStars programs are taught in more than five states for more than 20,000 families, and the organization is one of the few company-owned, company-operated organizations that consistently deliver trained coaches and instruction for soccer, cheer, and karate. Currently, ActivStars is focusing on soccer, cheerleading, and karate programs for students in Arizona, Texas, and the Midwest.
ActivStars describes community involvement as central to its teaching and coaching, and states that all instructors and coaches are hired locally within the community. Its karate programs provide access to ActivStars’ safety awareness program called SAFEShield. SAFEShield is described as an industry-leading safety awareness program designed to teach students and their families what is needed to understand unforeseen dangers in today’s world, including awareness about their environment and the safety measures most needed for children.
Parent feedback about ActivStars includes comments such as a “big emphasis on teamwork and fun, which you don’t find in many programs,” and thanks for being inclusive. Other testimonials describe ActivStars as a “great program” with “very helpful staff” who worked with families to make practice and games “a blast,” and state, “We couldn’t ask for a better program or instructors. Thank you ActivStars!”
