About

AZR Ascenders Youth Climbing Team focuses on sport climbing, top-rope climbing, bouldering, and fitness. The team is a youth climbing team based out of AZ on the Rocks, which is described as the best climbing gym in Arizona. Anyone age 8 to 18 can join the youth climbing team, and kids are required to be able to climb a grade of 5.7 to be on the team.

The AZR Ascenders climbing team develops well rounded competitive climbers with an emphasis on good sportsmanship and climbing etiquette. The team offers many different team levels for boys and girls age 8 to 19 and can accommodate all ages from 8 to 19 and all ability levels. Multiple levels of competitive team options are available, from new young competitors to seasoned elites, along with team options for those who want to improve skills and climb for fun with recreation teams. Kids who cannot yet climb 5.7 can start in introductory Kids Klimb classes. A free day pass is provided so a child can experience a day of climbing when a parent inquires via the form.

The team is headed up by team manager Nick V. AZ on the Rocks has been serving the Arizona climbing and fitness community since 2004 and is celebrating its 19th anniversary. AZR has a 4.9 star rating with over 1,000 reviews. AZR offers a scholarship program providing a month of free climbing.

The AZR Ascenders have produced a World Champion, 5 National Champions, multiple US Team Members, and many nationally ranked climbers. As a team, they have ranked nationally in the top 10 for several years. They have been ABS Regional Champions in 2008 and 2009, SCS Regional Champions in 2008, 2009, and 2011, and have multiple USAC Regional Champion awards. The AZR Ascenders typically have 8 to 15 competitors competing at Nationals each year, and the program produces national level athletes each Sport and Speed and Bouldering season. Climbing has recently become an Olympic sport.

Each year AZR donates approximately $50,000 in services and time to non-profit organizations in the community, with over $1.2MM total donations. Everyone entering the gym must have a completed and up-to-date AZ on the Rocks waiver, including both spectators and climbers, and all individuals under 18 must have their waiver completed and signed by their own parent before using the facility, with no permission slips accepted.
