About
Encinal Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program offers Junior Sailing Summer Camp, Summer Sailing Classes, a Spring Race Team Tuneup, a race team, high school sailing practices and racing, and a sailing and leadership course. The program also offers private and group lessons, Summer BAYS regatta participation, and social events such as Summer BBQs, a Dock Work Party, and a Summer Luau. Youth sailors use boats including Optis, FJs, C420s, ILCAs (Lasers), keelboats, and Oppis in different classes and lessons.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Spring Race Team Tuneup is a 4-week spring session, and summer runs in three 3-week sessions.
• Price: Summer session pricing ranges from $535–$1,535 for single sessions, with full summer and lunch supervision options also available.
All lessons in the Encinal Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program are taught by US Sailing certified instructors. Private and group lessons are offered on Optis, C420s, FJs, and keelboats, and summer classes use boats including Oppis for ages 7–12, Optis for ages 8–12, and FJs for ages 13–18. Prerequisites for many classes include the ability to pass a swim test and capsize test, and some classes require completion of Beginner Sailing or Intermediate Sailing or similar training and passing a skills inventory checklist approved by the Director.
The program’s mission is to empower young sailors with confidence, curiosity, and respect for the water by providing a safe, inclusive, and engaging sailing experience that builds skill, character, and a lifelong love of the sport. The race team represents Encinal Yacht Club at local, national, and international regattas in Optimists, C420s, FJs, and ILCAs. The program includes a sailing and leadership course for experienced sailors ages 13 and older, and Junior Sailing Summer Camp registration is open for 2026.
Encinal Yacht Club is host to 18 Bay Area high schools that use the club for practices and racing FJ sailboats throughout the school year, and the Encinal Sailing Foundation supports youth sailing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Encinal Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program is supported by the Encinal Sailing Foundation, a 501C3, and the t-shirt sponsorship program is described as a way to advertise a business while supporting young sailors. The Junior Sailing program is described as renowned for introducing youth to the sport and love of sailing, offers pathways regardless of sailing experience, and focuses on sportsmanship and sailing skills from learn-to-sail fundamentals to competitive racing, with no boat required for participation. The program is a four-time winner of the PICYA Admiral Chester Nimitz Trophy and is described as the “Most Outstanding Junior Sailing Program in the Bay!”
