About
Encinal Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program offers summer camp, a race team, college sailing, spring break sailing, and a sailing and leadership course. Participants learn to sail Optis, FJs, C420s, and ILCAs (Lasers), navigate the estuary, and practice safety and navigation. The program includes private and group lessons, high school sailing practices, high school racing in FJ sailboats, and opportunities to learn to race and take part in competitive racing, along with exploring the science and physics behind sailing, teamwork, and discovery.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Spring camps, a 4-week Spring Race Team Tuneup, and three 3-week summer class sessions
• Price: Summer session pricing ranges from $140–$2,000 depending on membership status and option selected
All lessons in the Encinal Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program are taught by US Sailing certified instructors. Youth sailors can join a race team for experienced competitive sailors who represent Encinal Yacht Club at local, national, and international regattas in Optimists, C420s, FJs, and ILCAs. Private or group lessons are offered on Optis, C420s, FJs, and keelboats, with prerequisites for certain classes that can include passing a swim and capsize test and completing a Beginner or Intermediate Sailing Class or similar training.
The program’s mission is to empower young sailors with confidence, curiosity, and respect for the water by providing a safe, inclusive, and engaging sailing experience that builds skill, character, and a lifelong love of the sport. Encinal Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program is supported by the Encinal Sailing Foundation, which supports youth sailing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sailors in grades 8–12 represent their schools and compete throughout the West Coast as part of the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association (PCISA), and Encinal Yacht Club is host to 18 Bay Area high schools that use the club for practices and racing FJ sailboats throughout the school year. The program is a four-time winner of the PICYA Admiral Chester Nimitz Trophy for “Most Outstanding Junior Sailing Program in the Bay!” and offers a T-shirt sponsorship program for businesses that want to support young sailors.
