He was selected by the Shaolin Temple in Songshan, Henan at age eight to continue his Kung Fu training as a lay disciple and, after 10 years of hard training, became proficient with eighteen weapons and a variety of Kung Fu boxing. Master Yan has won many gold medals in martial arts contests, including the International Wushu Championship, the World Traditional Wushu Instruments Championship, and a Shaolin boxing contest. His performances have appeared many times in large-scale variety shows for China Central Television, and in 2004 at the Great Hall of Beijing his performances were highly praised by Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2006, the Chinese government selected ten martial artists to accompany Premier Wen Jiabao and other national leaders to visit Egypt, and Master Yan was one of them, with the performance broadcast live by China Central Television and Egyptian Television. Master Yan started teaching Kung Fu in 2002 and has more than 20 years of teaching experience, and in 2012 he founded his first martial arts school, named the International Chi Institute, determined to share his years of martial arts experience with martial arts admirers. The program offers a free trial group lesson, and Tai Chi and Qi Gong are available as private lessons only.
