Alameda Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense Academy states that students not only learn practical self-defense and anti-bullying skills, but also develop Verbal Jiu-Jitsu, a communication system that teaches how to recognize conflict early, defuse tension, and protect peace, body, and future. The academy notes that its system improves mobility, flexibility, and overall performance without relying on punching or kicking, and that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is well known to burn a large number of calories while teaching practical self-defense and ground fighting arts. Students are responsible for maintaining appropriate training attire, including clean uniforms, rash guards, and protective gear, and lost or damaged equipment is the responsibility of the member.

Professor Sergio Silva leads the program and has been teaching kids and adults since 1992. He is a Brazilian native who learned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Capoeira, Muau Thai, and Boxing, and he moved to the USA in 1999. Alameda Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense Academy has been serving the Alameda community since 2008, and the Alameda Jiu-Jitsu academy has been in the East Bay since 2002, serving the areas of Oakland, San Leandro, Emeryville, Berkeley, and Hayward. The academy reports that it was the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in the Alameda, San Leandro, Oakland, Hayward, El Cerrito, and Albany area.
