About

LEAP Math and Reading offers math tutoring, English tutoring, a LEAP Study Hall, and an Early Learners program. The program provides in-center learning with after-school and weekend sessions and focuses only on math and English.

• Ages: 3–13 years old
• Schedule: After-school and weekend in-center sessions, with options including LEAP Study Hall on Mondays and core tutoring sessions Tuesday through Thursday and on Saturdays; students typically attend about two sessions per week, and each session is approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

The program is led by a credentialed educator and is guided by experience from inside Alameda Unified School District classrooms. Leadership includes Owner/Director Michelle Poh and Owner/Assistant Director Jack Liu. The curriculum focuses on math and English, follows modern Common Core standards, and was developed in the past ten years. Each instructor works with just three to four students, with a daily low instructor-to-student ratio of four students per instructor session and small group sessions. The Early Learners program is for ages 3 to 5 and is designed to prepare students for kindergarten, and children in this program must be potty trained and able to use the bathroom independently.

LEAP Math and Reading uses an initial assessment with Center Director Ms. Poh to create a personalized structured curriculum with a step-by-step scaffolding structure, along with home practice that reinforces progress. The program is woman-owned and family operated, and owners Michelle and Jack live in the community with their three kids. Testimonials from parents describe noticeable changes when children attend two times a week, a low tutor-to-children ratio that allows more personalized learning, and instructors who are described as bright, capable, patient, and able to correct students in a way that does not make them feel ashamed of wrong answers. Parents also report that their children look forward to sessions, are excited to do homework, and that the center is a lovely, kind, family-run business that makes education feel welcoming.
