The museum states that its mission is to use the USS Hornet and its collections, exhibitions, and educational programming to promote awareness and understanding of history, science, technology, and service. The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate and is part of the Smithsonian Affiliations Program. Educational programs use the museum’s environment to teach science and history concepts in an interactive manner, and the museum is mostly self-guided, with docents available for conversation and to lead tours. Group tours and field trips are available seven days a week, and homeschools and Scout groups qualify for field trip rates. Through Museums for All, visitors receiving SNAP benefits can receive reduced admission of $2.00 per visitor by presenting an EBT card at the Admissions Desk.

Due to safety concerns, all visitors on Daily Tours must be at least 48 inches in height. Bag size is restricted to 12 x 8 x 12 inches because of steep ladders between decks, with larger bags recommended to stay in vehicles and lockers available for rent at the Admissions Desk. Cameras are welcome with a neck or wrist strap, and personal photography is allowed throughout the ship, while professional equipment requires advance reservations through the Event Inquiry Form. Visitors are instructed to wear comfortable, closed-toed walking shoes because most decks are steel, and to consider layers because some parts of the ship can be cold. Flashlights are required for some specialty tours, including History Mystery tours, and children under 16 years of age must be with an adult at all times. Entry from the pier is via the first gangway.

The ship’s legacy includes World War II, the Vietnam War, and the recovery of the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 astronauts. A visitor testimonial from Kent Sherwood of Encore Travelers in Elk Grove, CA, states that it was a great trip and that the docents do a fantastic job with the tours while also protecting this part of history.
