Tomorrow Youth Repertory is an educational theater program based in Alameda, CA that offers after-school classes and camps for youths of all experience levels and serves hundreds of students. It offers various summer camps and classes ranging from K–12, Tech & Backstage Arts programs for grades 6 and up, and Dungeons & Dragons programs for grades 4 and up, with sections broken up by age. The program approaches theater as a team sport and rejects the idea of stars and supporting players, and it strives to provide a full theater experience with effort put into sets, costumes, and other elements of theater. It partners with talented designers as well as parent and teen volunteers, and teaches that all contributors, including designers, builders, volunteers, and custodians, are important and deserve as much respect as the most visible member of a production.
Tomorrow Youth Repertory was started in the summer of 2011 when Jordan Best, Amy Marie Haven, and Tyler Null met to discuss joining forces to offer weekly youth theater classes and productions. It operated for the first year as a sub-program of Alameda Children’s Musical Theater and then became an independent non-profit in 2012. The current board of directors of Tomorrow Youth Repertory includes Alisha Woo, Amy Marie Haven, Jordan Best, Tyler Null, Page Barnes, and Julia Bruce. Tomorrow Youth Repertory is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and donations are tax-deductible.
Tomorrow Youth Repertory states that it strives for a truly community-centered experience—“theater made for the community, by the community”—and that it believes in the power of theater to transform the community and those involved, promoting freedom of creativity, confidence, teamwork, and patience. It describes its goals as creating a nurturing, innovative, and stimulating theatrical experience as a means to enliven and inspire young people, offering a high level of quality to students and giving them a wider lens to appreciate all that is around them.
