The Parks Foundation is dedicated to educating youth, protecting the environment, and fostering community connections. Over the past decade, the Parks Foundation has contributed over $800,000 to the community. The organization serves 20,000 people each year in nature programming and reports that the community has spent 35,000 hours outside through its efforts. It is the only local non-profit organization in American Canyon that uses the outdoors to improve community health, children’s education, and social connection, and it is a 1% for the Planet approved Environmental Partner.
The program is part of a model public/private partnership between the City of American Canyon and the Parks Foundation. Its site is within a 15 minute walking distance to three Napa Valley Unified District schools, including two elementary schools and one middle school, and within a 10 minute walking distance to the Boys and Girls Club American Canyon Club House. It is part of a Wetlands Restoration Study that is managed by the City of American Canyon, and 15 program partners have helped the organization reach the community.
The program repurposes an old industrial site along the Napa River Wetlands into a two-acre parcel with a 5,000 square-foot building that includes green demonstration features and The Outdoor Connection, a trailside learning center. It offers new public access to pristine wetlands habitat, is centrally located in the North Bay along the San Francisco Bay Trail, and includes a proposed kayak launch.
