About
California Home School Sports offers organized sports and physical education activities for home-schooled children, including basketball, soccer, football, tennis, softball, and track & field. The program also includes physical education classes and hosts events such as the March Gladness Basketball Tournament, the Home School Volleyball Championships, and the Home School Track and Field Invitational.
California Home School Sports began as Christian Heritage Sports (CHS Sports) in 1995 with a summer soccer camp. In 2003, the 501c3 nonprofit organization California Home School Sports (CHSS) was created, and by 2006 CHSS unanimously became the league for home school teams in Southern California. Starting with the 2013–14 school year, there were eight home school groups or schools that were members of The CHSS League in Southern California. The leadership team has included Jeff Paterson and an attorney friend.
The stated mission of California Home School Sports is that every home-schooled child will have the opportunity to participate in physical education classes and athletic competition. The sports program is described as being designed around Biblical principles that instill Godly character traits, with a desire for each child to improve to the best of their ability and to improve their God-given talents. Coaches are asked to take an active role in teaching the fruits of the spirit as found in Galatians 5:22–24, to lead by example by putting God first in everything as referenced in Colossians 3:23, and to set aside regular devotional times during practice and game events. The program’s stated goals include glorifying God in everything, improving God-given talents, living Spirit-filled lives, and learning life’s lessons through sports.
California Home School Sports hosts three home school championship events that bring in home schoolers from many areas of California and neighboring states: the March Gladness Basketball Tournament, the Home School Volleyball Championships, and the Home School Track and Field Invitational. One of the main purposes of creating the 501c3 nonprofit organization was to create an open door for local businesses and sponsors to support CHSS and allow those entities to receive a tax credit. A testimonial associated with the program is the quote, “A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.” by Mary Lou Retton.
