Explorer Camp Menlo Park is part of Avid4 Adventure, whose mission states that kids build confidence, make new friends, and master essential skills in activities like paddling, biking, rock climbing, and hiking, and that the organization was created to give kids a love of outdoor activity and to support future caretaking of the planet. The camp is backed by the Avid4 Adventure Guarantee, which states that every camp will provide an authentic outdoor adventure, incredibly well-trained and professional staff, and increased confidence, and if these promises are not met, the next Avid4 Adventure camp is free. One-week Explorer summer camps are for 5 and 6 year olds entering Kindergarten or 1st Grade and have a camper-to-staff ratio of 5:1, and programs evolve as campers grow from age 3 to 17.
Avid4 Adventure states that its instructors are insatiable outdoors experts who love adventuring and working with kids, are all 18 and older, have serious safety and skills training, and are described as the number one point of positive feedback from parents. The organization reports that it recruits, hires, and trains high-class outdoor educators, is 100% committed to paying them a fair wage, and does everything in its power to keep kids safe while teaching them to take calculated, well-communicated risks. At the helm of Avid4 Adventure is founder David Secunda, former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry.
Avid4 Adventure is a Certified B Corp committed to public transparency and accountability, runs summer camps accredited by the American Camp Association, and has been named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps. It operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The program provides transportation to and from recreation areas, organizes adventures in recreation areas, and gives campers access to top-of-the-line gear specifically sized for kids, and it strongly encourages campers to bring their own bike for biking day with training wheels removed before camp.
Parent testimonials report that a camper learned to ride a bike without training wheels after attending, that staff are described as mature, responsible, and excited to share their passion with children, and that children were active every day and continued talking about camp more than a month later.
