About
Archery Summer Camp includes safety training, hands-on experience shooting a bow, and practice in learning how to score a target. Campers take part in various archery games, fun shoot and team events, technique and form practice, fun balloon shoots, and games, while also working on achieving their next JOAD level and maintaining and repairing equipment such as bows and arrows. The program includes bow (recurve) rental, arrows rental, and safety gear rental, and archers are instructed to practice with recurve bows or may bring their own recurve or compound bow if it has been set up for them.
• Ages: 7–15 years old
• Schedule: The club meets on Saturday mornings year-round, with practices generally held indoors from October to April and outdoors from late April to October
• Price: JOAD has an annual membership fee as well as monthly dues
During class sessions, archers work to earn their JOAD pins and certificates while developing technique and form, participating in fun balloon shoots and games, and working on their next JOAD level. The JOAD program follows the same shooting and equipment rules as USA Archery and the International Archery Association (FITA), and JOAD archers can earn indoor and outdoor achievement pins as well as Olympian Award Levels of Bronze, Silver, and Gold, which receive special recognition from the USA Archery Office. Sessions are limited to a maximum of six archers with two USA Archery Certified instructors, and classes are taught by certified USA Archery instructors and a Level 3 Coach, following the safety guidelines of USA Archery Instructor Training, the official training course of the United States Archery Association (USAA).
Golden State JOAD is a year-round archery program for youth archers, with a structured program and regularly scheduled class sessions, and archers are expected to meet a minimum attendance level of 85% and attend at least three out of four Saturdays per month, often more depending on the tournament schedule. Parent involvement is required for at least 30 hours per year assisting with fundraisers, and the club travels to various tournaments in California. Requirements for joining the Recreational Section of the JOAD Club include options such as attending an introductory class, successfully completing a summer camp program, having previous archery experience that can be validated, at least six months of participation in another JOAD club that can be validated, or being coached by a previous NAA or NFAA Certified Instructor that can be validated.
The program’s mission states that archery is safe, fun, and easy to learn, is suitable for boys and girls of all ages and abilities, and is a self-challenging and rewarding activity that blends physical and mental resources. The mission also states that routine archery scoring reinforces basic math skills and that benefits of archery include focus, concentration, and goal-setting skills. Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) is described as a youth archery program for children 20 years of age and under, with structured classes where students learn basic fundamentals of archery in a fun setting, and the skills and instruction can prepare students for competition shooting. In Explore Archery, students earn achievement awards through active participation in individual and team-building activities, with a focus on building fundamental skills and a competitive edge rather than athletic ability or perfect scores.
The club was formed in April 2005 for youth archers who wanted to expand their knowledge and skills in the sport. It is led by volunteer NAA Certified Level 3 Coaches and NAA Certified Level II Instructors, including Lisa Pole, a Level 3 USA Archery NTS Certified Coach; Rick Carfrae, a Level 3 USA Archery NTS Certified Coach; and Taylor, a Level 3 NTS USA Coach and Certified Olympic Recurve Coach. Classes prepare archers for state, regional, and national tournaments in both indoor and outdoor target ranges, and students in JOAD may shoot recurve or compound bows based on their preference.
The program notes that archers must wear closed-toed athletic shoes and bring a sealed beverage container and light snack if needed, with no peanut products allowed, and that archers must be picked up promptly on time with no exceptions. The club also participates in community events, including benefits for local veterans on June 30, 2024, and July 12, 2026.
