About

Camp Valor is a faith-based non-profit program where boys take part in a boot camp that includes physical fitness, an obstacle course, rolling over logs, climbing over a wall, and climbing up a 13 foot rope. The program also includes camping trips, archery, airsoft marksmanship, marching in parades such as the Veteran's parade, and daily running both individually and in group formation. Boys study the Bible, learn military courtesy, the chain of command, how to march, and practice team work.

• Ages: 9–17 years old
• Schedule: Annual program beginning in the summer, starting with a one-week boot camp phase (Boot Camp 2026 July 6th–11th; approximately 55 hours of training), with boys at training Monday–Thursday 8:00am–3:00pm and remaining on site from Friday 8:00am to Saturday 9:00am for a graduation ceremony
• Price: $450.00 for one week of boot camp, which includes the uniform and a one-year enlistment; renewal fee of $120 to continue in the next year of training; monthly payments accepted for boot camp with all fees due by June 1 of the current year

Camp Valor was founded in 2011 and begins each annual program in the summer, with all new boys starting in boot camp and then joining the unit to attend special events over the next 10 months, including camping trips and marching in parades. Returning soldiers who have completed boot camp are part of the year's active duty unit, and attendance is closely reviewed for promotions. The program states that it is not a correctional program, that it is a tough program, and that every young man who has completed the training has made positive changes in their lives, with stated values of Dedication, Determination, and Discipline. Camp Valor challenges boys physically through physical training and the obstacle course, emotionally by demanding discipline and taking responsibility for their actions, and spiritually by studying the Bible and learning how to apply its principles in their lives. The director is Gunny Hernandez, USMC Retired, a 20-year U.S. Marine, drill instructor and infantry instructor, and pastor of Christ Centered Church Bakersfield. Boys are required to bring lunch every day with a refillable bottle of water, and community involvement includes marching in the November 11th Veterans Day Parade.
