AXIS Dance Company Youth Programs
Berkeley Ballet Theater, 1370 Tenth St, Berkeley, CA 94710
About
AXIS Dance Company Youth Programs are part of AXIS, which is one of the nation’s most acclaimed ensembles of disabled, non-disabled, d/Deaf and neurodiverse performers. The programs include in-person and online classes and events that center access from the ground up, with verbal descriptions of movement in classes and workshops as an alternative to sight-based references for movement. Floor marking tape, tactile maps, and other touch-based access tools can be provided for workshops and classes upon request with advance notice.
• Schedule: Online classes and virtual programs include closed captions.
AXIS Dance Company was founded in 1987, and its mission statement is that AXIS redefines dance and disability. AXIS believes in accessibility for everyone and pledges to work towards full accessibility for all disabled, d/Deaf and neurodivergent people in all of their programs and services. Website and virtual events include ALT text in images, ASL interpretation, and audio description when possible, and all photos on the website, email communications, and social media channels have ALT text image descriptions embedded for screen readers. All new media are captioned for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, and AXIS is in the process of captioning archival media.
In-person programming includes mandatory wheelchair accessibility in all venues, live ASL interpretation, audio description, relaxed performance options, chemical sensitivity requests, and live touch tour experiences whenever possible. ASL interpretation for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals is provided whenever requested with at least two weeks’ advance notice for all AXIS-hosted public classes, workshops, events, and performances, and automated open captions are provided for all public classes, workshops, and events hosted by AXIS. Sensory items and ear defenders are available for AXIS-hosted performances and classes, and AXIS encourages visitors to stim and regulate themselves as needed, including going outside or into a quiet area that AXIS staff can guide them to. Relaxed or sensory-friendly performances offer an environment where traditional theater etiquette is relaxed to welcome all audiences.
Masks are not mandatory for many public programs but are welcomed and encouraged, and masks are available on site at all AXIS-hosted public events. At AXIS-hosted public programs, workshops, and classes, AXIS strives to provide a variety of seating options including cushions, floor chairs with back support, and chairs without arm rests. AXIS’ goal is to make events as fragrance-free as possible and they request that those who share their space not wear fragrance or scented products when attending events. Online classes and virtual programs include closed captions, and AXIS strives to include CART captions, ASL interpretation, and live audio description when possible and when requested.
