Berkeley Art Studio offers classes and workshops in ceramics, photography, drawing, painting, design, printmaking, crafting and textile arts, darkroom photography, digital media, graphic design, web design, digital storytelling, and digital photography. Participants can also take part in specific sessions such as a Portrait Photo Workshop, Intro to Crochet, Amigurumi, Knitting: Beyond the Basics, an Intro to Animation Workshop, Open Figure Drawing Days, a Watercolor Workshop: Sketchbook Creative Play, open figure drawing, art-making workshops, jewelry-making, comics, illustrations, and animation.
• Schedule: Berkeley Art Studio is open Monday through Friday from 12 pm to 10 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm; Berkeley Art Studio West is open Monday 4 pm to 9 pm, Tuesday through Friday 12 pm to 9 pm, and Saturday and Sunday 12 pm to 5 pm; the Creative Lab entrance via Berkeley Art Studio is open until 10 pm Monday through Friday.
• Price: Open Figure Drawing Days cost $25 per session.
The program’s mission statement is “Creativity Thrives Here! Berkeley Art Studio registration is open to UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff, as well as the entire community. We offer classes in ceramics, photography, drawing, painting, design, printmaking, crafting and textile arts. The Studio has a rich history of providing quality art instruction taught by our staff of professional artists and is a welcoming place for students and artists at a variety of skill levels.” Berkeley Art Studio registration is open to the public, including UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff, the greater Bay Area community, and the entire East Bay community through the Creative Lab. Creative Lab offers printing and design services as well as classes and workshops focused on digital arts. Gift certificates are available with values of $100, $200, $300, or custom amounts, and are good for one year from the date of purchase. Open figure drawing is a time for artists of all skill levels and backgrounds to gather and practice drawing from a live model. Teambuilding workshops are available as 2-hour-long private classes taught by professional instructors, with all materials included. Berkeley Art Studio is a unit of the Student Union.
The leadership team includes Christina Sanchez, Ceramics Specialist; Gianna Benetti, Ceramics Specialist; Isabella Schreiber, Associate Director of Creative Programs, Berkeley Art Studio & Creative Lab; Danny Neece, Visual Arts Manager; and Ken Becker, Ceramics Studio Manager. Instructors at the studio include professional artists with advanced training and awards: Rebecca Rippon received her M.F.A. from San Francisco Art Institute and was awarded the Murphy Cadogan Contemporary Art Award; Larissa Mellor received her BFA from Maine College of Art and MFA from The Ohio State University and was a 2010 Fulbright Fellow to Germany in Painting and Printmaking; Yasmeen Abedifard holds an MFA from Cornell University, received the Charles Baskerville Painting Award, and received the Ignatz Award for Outstanding Minicomic for Death Bloom in 2023; and Alan Tarbell has an MFA from the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he spent four years as a bilingual professor. For 2-hour-long private teambuilding workshop classes, all materials are included. UC Berkeley affiliates are asked to have their Cal1 card with them after 5 pm in the Creative Lab building, and community members who are not UC Berkeley affiliates enter the building through the Berkeley Art Studio to access the Creative Lab, with this entrance open until 10 pm Monday through Friday.
