Berkeley Art Studio offers classes and workshops in ceramics, photography, drawing, painting, design, printmaking, crafting and textile arts, darkroom photography, and digital media. The program also offers open figure drawing sessions, art-making workshops, and digital arts and photography classes, including digital photography, graphic design, web design, and digital storytelling.
• Schedule: Classes and studio access are available on weekdays and weekends, with options in the afternoon and evening.
• Price: Open figure drawing is only $25 per session.
Berkeley Art Studio registration is open to UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff, as well as the greater Bay Area and East Bay community. The Studio is described as having a rich history of providing quality art instruction taught by a staff of professional artists and as a welcoming place for students and artists at a variety of skill levels. The program also offers teambuilding workshops as 2-hour private art-making classes taught by professional instructors with all materials included, and gift certificates are available for purchase online. Creative Lab, connected with the Studio, offers printing and design services and classes and workshops in digital arts and is described as a resource for the entire East Bay community.
The leadership team includes Christina Sanchez (Ceramics Specialist & Administrator), Isabella Schreiber (Associate Director of Creative Programs, Berkeley Art Studio & Creative Lab), Danny Neece (Visual Arts Manager), Ken Becker (Ceramics Studio Manager), and Mariana Varela (Ceramics Technician). Instructors include professional artists such as Rebecca Rippon, who received an M.F.A. from San Francisco Art Institute and the Murphy Cadogan Contemporary Art Award; Larissa Mellor, who received a BFA from Maine College of Art, an MFA from The Ohio State University, and was a 2010 Fulbright Fellow to Germany in Painting and Printmaking; Yasmeen Abedifard, who holds an MFA from Cornell University, received the Charles Baskerville Painting Award, and received the Ignatz Award for Outstanding Minicomic for “Death Bloom” in 2023; and Alan Tarbell, who has an MFA from the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he spent four years as a bilingual professor. For access to Creative Lab after 5 pm, UC Berkeley affiliates are expected to have a Cal1 card, and community members who are not UC Berkeley affiliates are instructed to enter through the Berkeley Art Studio entrance, which is open until 10 pm Monday through Friday.
