The studio is owned by artist Jessica Abbott Williams, a graduate of the Ceramics Department of the California College of the Arts in Oakland. The staff consists of working artists who are described as talented and inspiring, and the organization also runs a high school work training program and employment pathway for young people and working artists.
The mission of Brushstrokes is to create an atmosphere that is beautiful, inspiring, relaxing, and hospitable where visitors can express their creativity through hands-on art activities, and to serve as a drop-in studio space where the community, friends, and families can connect through making art. Brushstrokes states that it strives to contribute to the wider East Bay community by being involved in schools and other civic organizations.
Brushstrokes partners with the Alameda County Community Food Bank to work with children at local schools to paint over 500 bowls per year for the annual Empty Bowls ACCFB fundraiser, donating time and materials for this project, and is a member of Buy Local Berkeley. One parent testimonial describes Brushstrokes Art Camp as including themed weeks on topics such as Nature, Animals, and Art Techniques, with sessions that adapt to different age groups and staff who are described as fun, supportive, and inspiring.
