About

Berkeley Coding Academy Summers focuses on hands-on coding lessons where students learn new concepts, model code, and create their own coding notebooks. The program includes cohort time to apply new concepts, work on project development and original research, and work on data projects that include real datasets and original research. Students build and evaluate machine learning models, create data visualizations, analyze big data, and use NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Sklearn, and Keras libraries, with access to annotated lecture notebooks stored in their Google Drives.

• Schedule: Data Science - The AI Journey from July 6 – 31, 2026

During the Data Science - The AI Journey program, lectures are described as engaging coding experiences rather than passive watching, and students are front and center with cameras on, sharing code, explaining their work, giving presentations, providing feedback, and participating in collaborative periods of instruction. Cohorts average 6 students of a similar age and coding background, with fundamentals reinforced in beginning cohorts and more advanced work in higher-level cohorts, along with 1-1 support. Bonus time and break time divide longer coding days, and bonus time is one of the most popular and anticipated parts of the day.

The program’s mission states that every summer Berkeley Coding Academy inspires teens in the Bay Area and beyond with its award-winning summer program Data Science - The AI Journey, which is designed by educators for students and emphasizes a code-first approach with a strong focus on machine learning as the code behind AI. The mission also states that students are trained to become practicing data scientists using NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Sklearn, and Keras to analyze big data and make predictions using machine learning models, and that the program works within the larger data science community to build new connections. The curriculum has been continuously revised for over six years and includes hundreds of 4K videos re-recorded in 2025, coding notebooks, coding guides, project guides, slides, and problem sets.

According to the program, students walk away with an impressive portfolio project, dozens of coding notebooks, and a certificate verifying their work, and data projects are widely used for college applications and science fairs. Reported outcomes include BCA graduates winning science fairs, majoring in Data Science, earning Data Science internships, and starting AI clubs. BCA students have given lecture time a mean rating of 4.7/5 over six years, cohort time a mean rating of 4.9/5 over six years, and bonus time a mean rating of 4.8/5 over six years.

The program notes that small cohorts allow students to build personal connections and be known on a first-name basis, and that students use and analyze the same machine learning algorithms as professionals. It also states that BCA students join an online, supportive community centered around code and that the program creates ways for students to connect with each other and with staff during cohort time. Parent and student testimonials describe individual experiences with the program. One parent, Stellah S, states, “My daughter REALLY enjoyed the hands-on coding lessons as Corey taught in a way that she was able to explore on her own and understand fully the purpose of the code.” Student comments include, “Overall, I love every single activity that we do” (Rifah M), “This was a great time. It’s insane how I learned more in this class than I did in an entire semester of a coding class at my high school” (Cielo P), “I liked how deep we went into everything and the code-first approach” (Naitik G), and “I was really surprised at just how much they covered in only 3 weeks” (Katie W).
