Berkeley Coding Academy Summers
Berkeley Coding Academy (online program), Berkeley, CA
About
Berkeley Coding Academy Summers focuses on hands-on coding lessons, lecture time, cohort time, and bonus time. The program centers on data projects using real datasets and original research, where students build and evaluate machine learning models, create coding notebooks, develop projects, conduct original research, give presentations, and provide feedback during collaborative periods of instruction.
• Schedule: Data Science - The AI Journey from July 6 – 31, 2026
Every summer, Berkeley Coding Academy Summers runs its award-winning summer program Data Science - The AI Journey. The program trains students to become practicing data scientists using the NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Sklearn, and Keras libraries, with a strong emphasis on machine learning and a code-first approach. Students use and analyze the same machine learning algorithms as professionals, create data visualizations, and work toward a portfolio project, multiple coding notebooks, and a certificate verifying their work. Lectures are described as engaging coding experiences and include annotated lecture notebooks stored in student Google Drives.
Cohorts average 6 students of similar age and coding background, with fundamentals reinforced in beginning cohorts and more depth in advanced cohorts, and 1-1 support is provided. Small cohorts allow students to build personal connections with each other and staff, and the program gets to know everyone on a first-name basis. Bonus time and break time divide long coding days, and bonus time is used for students to connect and have fun outside of coding. BCA students have given lecture time a mean rating of 4.7/5, cohort time 4.9/5, and bonus time 4.8/5 over six years.
The original curriculum has been continuously revised for over 6 years and includes hundreds of 4K videos re-recorded in 2025, coding notebooks, coding guides, project guides, slides, and problem sets. BCA students join an online, supportive community centered around code, where they are front and center with cameras on and are asked to share code, explain work, give presentations, provide feedback, and step forward during collaborative periods of instruction. All data projects include real datasets and original research and are widely used for college applications and science fairs. BCA graduates have won science fairs, majored in Data Science, earned Data Science internships, and started AI clubs, and the program states that its graduates are well-prepared to navigate, analyze, and build AI to make a positive difference in the world.
The program works within the larger data science community to build new connections. The stated mission is that every summer, Berkeley Coding Academy inspires teens in the Bay Area and beyond with its award-winning summer program Data Science - The AI Journey.
Parent and student comments include: “My daughter REALLY enjoyed the hands-on coding lessons as Corey taught in a way that she was able to explore on her own and understand fully the purpose of the code” (Stellah S, BCA parent). Students say, “Overall, I love every single activity that we do” (Rifah M), “This was a great time. It’s insane how I learned more in this class than I did in an entire semester of a coding class at my high school” (Cielo P), “I liked how deep we went into everything and the code-first approach” (Naitik G), and “I was really surprised at just how much they covered in only 3 weeks” (Katie W).
