About

The ECUC 21st Century CLC Expanded Learning Program Tutoring program offers support in core subjects such as mathematics and English Language Arts, along with communication and social skills. Students take part in academic enrichment and other enrichment activities, including career exploration through research on careers, job shadowing experiences, and internships in various careers. The program also provides nutritional meals, resources, and activities that promote physical and mental wellbeing.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Tutoring times vary and follow UC Berkeley’s semester system, with sessions offered during the Fall (August to December) and Spring (January to May) terms, and a virtual office on Zoom available from 8:00am to 6:00pm PST.

The ECUC 21st Century CLC Expanded Learning Program Tutoring is a supplemental tutoring program overseen by UC Berkeley’s School of Education and enhanced and led by an Academic Liaison. UC Berkeley students, enrolled through the EDUC 140AC class, serve as tutors, and select students are placed in school day support or after school tutoring. Tutoring time is used not only for homework completion but also for work on specific skills that teachers or parents have identified for extra support. Tutors are encouraged to build community with students and often talk about pets, video games, and other interests before beginning a lesson.

The Academic Liaison sends an email to all EDUC 140 students every morning with Zoom links, updated information, tips, and suggestions, and also monitors all tutoring rooms and coaches tutors throughout the semester. Orientation and training for tutors are provided and recorded, and a shared Google Drive folder holds resources for tutoring and mentoring students. EDUC 140AC students support up to 30 elementary students each semester, and teachers and parents report that this support has helped boost academic confidence along with reading and math skills.

The program’s mission is to provide high quality expanded learning program activities to improve students’ 21st Century skills, build protective factors and resiliency assets, and assist families in supporting their students’ academic success. Its core framework is referred to as STEEAAM, which includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Executive Functioning, Arts, Athletics, and Math, with a focus on school-community partnerships, engaged learning, family engagement, and health and wellness. The Eastbay Collaborative for Underserved Children (ECUC) operates as an Expanded Learning Program under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, supporting academic enrichment during non-school hours for children, particularly those attending high-poverty and low-performing schools, in partnership with many local organizations. The program is granted and supported by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program and lists Marni Higgins as Academic Liaison, Glynda Hull as Project Director, and Adrienne Herd as Point of Contact.
