• Price: 2026 season club fees per player are due at a parent meeting (date to be announced), with additional costs for uniform, travel, and tournament fees; Zelle is the preferred payment method with no fee, and checks are accepted payable to Starlings Volleyball Berkeley; players with financial need can request full or partial assistance; club dues run through Starlings Nationals and there are no refunds
Starlings Berkeley Volleyball is led by Starlings Berkeley Director Kim Hoglund, with coaches identified as Coach Alex, Coach Portia, Coach Marilu, Coach Finley, and Coach Bella. The program is part of Starlings Volleyball, USA, which began in 1996 with a single inner-city San Diego team at Lincoln High School in San Diego, California. The stated goal of the club is to inspire student-athletes to reach their full potential on the volleyball court, in the classroom, and in the community, and Starlings Berkeley serves underrepresented communities. Starlings Volleyball, USA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that states that every girl deserves the opportunity to play club volleyball regardless of socioeconomic background or level of play.
Starlings Volleyball, USA reports serving more than 3,000 girls in approximately 75 clubs, with programs in over 70 cities and Native American reservations nationwide, and approximately 75 clubs in more than 50 cities and Native American reservations throughout the U.S. Starlings notes that its dues, if any, are a fraction of most junior club costs, with the goal that no girl is turned away because of inability to pay, and that assistance is available for players with financial need, including help with the Players Fund Application. Two player packs are required, consisting of long sleeve jerseys in white and pink, and all items in the fan store are decorated with Starlings, USA only. Required player forms include a registration form, a JVA waiver, and a Starlings USA waiver, and Zelle and checks are listed as payment options.
One student testimonial states that “Starlings isn't just about volleyball. It teaches us how to set goals and how to get across the bumps in the road we're all maneuvering along — the road to success,” attributed to Starling Lili Sun, 10th grade. Another testimonial from Deitre Collins-Parker, head women’s coach at San Diego State University and a starter on the 1988 U.S. Olympic volleyball team, describes Starlings as giving young athletes a chance to continue playing and competing after the high school season and notes that San Diego State coaches have attended Starlings tournaments to recruit and have seen many talented athletes.
