Step Up Tutoring is mobilizing a national network of tutors to provide free, one-on-one online tutoring and mentorship to 2nd–6th grade students from underserved communities. Since its founding in 2020, the program has supported more than 8,300 2nd–6th grade students from underserved communities and has delivered over 250,000 hours of tutoring. The program has partnered with over 40 districts and charter networks across Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York City, DC, and Arizona, with community volunteers typically serving one student each.

Tutors include volunteers and Federal Work-Study college students from over 40 colleges across the country, and all tutors are vetted, selected, and background checked. Tutors receive training and ongoing coaching, and they complete Step Up’s training co-developed with ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and Stanford University’s National Student Support Accelerator. The program uses a hybrid human-tech model that combines trained volunteers and Federal Work-Study college students with AI-powered tutor feedback tools and adaptive learning technology. Tutors use adaptive, AI-powered learning software and follow a research-backed curriculum in either math or reading, with academic support tailored to each student’s personal needs.

Reported outcomes include improved math performance by 22 percentile points (from the 38th to the 60th percentile), 86% of students feeling more confident in math and reading after tutoring with Step Up, and 97% of students believing their tutor cares about them. Among tutors, 94% report being personally impacted by the experience, and 82% of high school and college tutors report that Step Up increased their interest in teaching. The leadership team includes Sam Olivieri, Chief Executive Officer; Angelo DiNardi, Chief Technology Officer; Annie Johansen, Director of Learning Innovation; Atiya Davis, Tutor Operations and Partnerships Manager; Camille Velasco, Family Coordinator; Charmaine Ho, Senior Director, Recruiting & Onboarding; Dani De La Cruz, Family Experience Coordinator; Daniel Halper, Co-Founder, Head of Step Up Labs; and Erin King, Senior Manager, Tutor Recruitment.
