Since 2005, UpSwing Aerial Dance Company has been a Berkeley destination for dancers and aerialists to develop their artistry and skills. UpSwing is a contemporary aerial dance company that features the repertory of Artistic Director Cherie Carson, who blends movement and encourages improvisation and collaboration among dancers and students. The company currently has five performing dancers and aerialists and has been presented nationally in Atlanta, New York, Seattle, Houston, and San Francisco. Its mission is to inspire and share a love of original aerial dance and to show that aerial dance can reveal human imagination, relationships with others, and one’s inner self.

UpSwing offers classes from the company as well as from nationally recognized choreographers and teachers, and also teaches workshops across the United States in cities including Atlanta, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Seattle, and Santa Barbara. The program has been recognized as the “Best Way to Learn How to Fly” in SF Weekly’s Best of the Bay 2006, listed as one of the “Top 5 exclusive classes to take This Summer 2015” by TheCultureTrip.com, featured in “Your 2019 Workout Horoscope: The Best New Exercises to Try in the Bay Area,” and named in the October 2019 issue of Diablo Magazine as one of five events not to miss. A studio guideline updated on 4/1/24 states that students are no longer required to wear masks, may choose to wear masks if they wish, and have access to hand sanitizer provided for all who enter the studio.
