About
Spectrum Surf Camps offers one-week surf camps that focus on surfing. Campers spend their time in the water learning and practicing surfing during these one-week surf camps. Participants experience the healing effects of the ocean and the mindfulness of surfing.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: One-week surf camps
Spectrum Surf Camps were formed in 2010 with a mission to bring the stoke to children and adults with disabilities by offering one-week therapeutic surf camps. This unique therapeutic program serves children and adults with disabilities, including, but not limited to, autism spectrum disorder, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and emotional disturbances. Camp enrollment is limited to eight campers, with a 1:1 and/or 2:1 camper-to-instructor ratio, and while there is no guarantee that each camper will stand up on their board, campers experience the thrill of the ocean and riding a wave. Bolinas and Stinson Beach are described as beginner’s spots that offer consistent wave height and speed during the summer months with gentle rollers and a sandy bottom.
Staff includes behavior specialists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, peer volunteers, and surf instructors who have experience working with both children and adults with special needs. The program was created by Natalie Pepper, a mom, surfer, and education specialist who started a surf camp to serve children with special needs. Spectrum Surf Camps is a contributing program to the International Surf Therapy Organization and is sponsored by Live Water Surf Shop, located in Stinson Beach and Fairfax, California.
Parent and camper feedback includes comments such as “AN AMAZING ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDED A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE FOR MY CHILD AND ME!” and “SURFING HAS MADE ME BRAVE AND FILLED WITH DETERMINATION!” from Ozzie, age 9. One parent shared, “I JUST WANT TO GET MY KIDS OUT IN THE COMMUNITY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I WANT THEM TO EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT THINGS [LIKE SURFING].” Another parent noted that the program is important because “kiddos who are on the [autism] spectrum or who have physical disabilities are often left behind when it comes to having normal childhood experiences like going to the beach,” and described how staff “figured out the way to get [her child] not just in the water, but actually riding the wave,” even though he has very high needs.
