• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: One-week surf camps
Spectrum Surf Camps were formed in 2010 with a mission to bring the stoke to children and adults with disabilities by offering one-week therapeutic surf camps. This unique therapeutic program offers one-week surf camps for children and adults with disabilities, including, but not limited to, autism spectrum disorder, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and emotional disturbances. Camp is limited to eight campers with a 1:1 and/or 2:1 camper/instructor ratio, and participants will experience the healing effects of the ocean and mindfulness of surfing.
The leadership team includes Natalie Pepper, a mom, surfer, and education specialist who created a surf camp to serve children with special needs. Staff includes behavior specialists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, peer volunteers, and surf instructors who have experience working with both children and adults with special needs. Spectrum Surf Camps is a fiscally sponsored project of MarinLink, a California non-profit corporation exempt from federal tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service, and is a contributing program to the International Surf Therapy Organization. Spectrum Surf Camps is sponsored by Live Water Surf Shop.
Parent and participant feedback includes comments such as “AN AMAZING ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDED A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE FOR MY CHILD AND ME!” and “SURFING HAS MADE ME BRAVE AND FILLED WITH DETERMINATION!” from Ozzie, age 9. One parent shared, “I JUST WANT TO GET MY KIDS OUT IN THE COMMUNITY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I WANT THEM TO EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT THINGS [LIKE SURFING].” Another parent noted that kiddos on the autism spectrum or with physical disabilities are often left behind when it comes to normal childhood experiences like going to the beach, and described how camp staff figured out a way to get a high-needs camper not just in the water, but actually riding the wave.
