YMCA After School Programs include daily homework help and tutoring, literacy enrichment, and science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) activities. The program schedule includes time for character development and social emotional learning, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, service-learning, leadership development, global and cultural learning, and college and career exploration. Participants also have nutrition education, healthy snacks or meals, physical activity with group games, and outdoor youth choice time that can include playground use and equipment such as hula hoops, jump ropes, and balls.
• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: A sample daily schedule includes check-in and hand-washing, youth choice activity stations, quiet time often used for homework or reading, an afternoon snack, physical activity with group games, outdoor youth choice time, and curriculum or project time, with exact times and order varying by site and school dismissal time.
Before and after school programs serve youth entering Transitional Kindergarten and up, and Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are escorted from their classroom to the YMCA program space by YMCA staff each day. Youth in grades 1 and up have a maximum of 10 minutes after school dismissal to arrive and be checked in to the after school program. Snack is provided by the YMCA, and youth are allowed to bring a snack from home. The program is a nut-free environment, and families are asked not to send any nuts or products made with nuts.
YMCA After School Programs of YMCA of Silicon Valley state that YMCA memberships and programs are open to everyone, and individuals and families may apply for scholarships toward YMCA memberships and programs, supported by Annual Campaign contributions. If a third party pays for child care, registration cannot be done online and families must email the YMCA to register. Registration at ASES, 21st Century and ELO-P grant-funded programs is by referral only. YMCA of Silicon Valley also offers a wilderness resident camp in the Redwoods at YMCA Camp Campbell and before and after school programs at multiple school campuses.

Program health and safety practices include visual health checks of children and staff throughout the day and alignment with California Department of Public Health and individual school district protocols and procedures. Face coverings are optional but may be requested of staff or participants if cold or flu symptoms are present. A medical isolation space is established for any child or staff who is feeling ill and waiting to be picked up, and parents are required to arrange pick up within one hour of being contacted that their child is not feeling well. The program follows an increased hand washing schedule, including 20-second hand washing for all participants and staff before program, between each activity, before lunch and snacks, after lunch and snacks, and before the program ends, at minimum. Sanitation procedures include an increased cleaning schedule to wipe down surfaces throughout the day, at minimum before program, between activities, before lunch, after lunch, before pick up, and after pick up. The program also reduces paper use as much as possible during check-in and check-out procedures and throughout the day.
