About
Scholars Academy offers structured sports and physical activities such as basketball, team sports like soccer and baseball, individual sports like swimming and track, fitness-based programs, martial arts including karate and Olympic judo, Family Kickboxing, and Kids Karate. The program also includes tutoring, homework help, after-school academic enrichment in reading, writing, math, and science, as well as social activities like arts and crafts, a game room with Foosball, Ping Pong, and Air Hockey, and seasonal camps with field trips and kids sports programs. Students have access to a quiet, focused study room for homework, reading, or wind-down time.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Program hours are available Monday to Friday with afternoon and evening options, and on Saturday during late morning to early afternoon
Scholars Academy’s mission is to enrich the lives of each of its members through a model that includes competitive sports, fitness, academic assistance, after-school enrichment, life skills training, and seasonal camps. The program features an Extended Day Program that combines academic support with structured sports activities and after-school enrichment as an alternative to traditional daycare. Its Life Skills Development curriculum focuses on teamwork, discipline, leadership, resilience, respect, and personal responsibility, and students are grouped by age and ability so they feel challenged but not overwhelmed.
The Academy highlights two cornerstone athletic programs: Martial Arts and Basketball. The Martial Arts Program is organized into three cohorts—Freshmen, Juniors, and Seniors—with Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced ability levels, while the Basketball Program also uses age and ability cohorts. The program follows a whole-child philosophy that blends physical training with academic enrichment and social-emotional learning, uses individualized learning plans and a flexible curriculum guided by each student’s pace, and offers support for students with ADHD or other learning challenges through patient and encouraging instruction. Older students serve as mentors and role models for younger members, and the Academy describes its culture as family-like and close-knit.
Mr. Baker leads as a seasoned coach with over 30 years of experience at both collegiate and high school levels and has a background in education and sports science. The Academic Team includes trained tutors and some of Brentwood’s credentialed educators, and each tutor is hand-selected by the Extended Day Coordinator. Scholars Academy is located in Brentwood and serves families from Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Oakley, and Antioch.
