About

Scholars Academy offers structured sports and fitness activities such as basketball, soccer, baseball, swimming, track, martial arts, Olympic judo, Kids Karate, Family Kickboxing, fitness training, and fitness-based programs that focus on strength, agility, and endurance. The program also includes arts and crafts, games, creative crafts, indoor and outdoor activities, special events, guest visitors, field trips, and seasonal camps. Students can take part in after-school enrichment, academic assistance, tutoring, homework help, academic enrichment programs, tutoring services, life skills training, character development classes, and specialized self-defense classes, with access to a game room featuring Foosball, Ping Pong, and Air Hockey, as well as a study room for homework, reading, or wind-down time.

Basketball training at Scholars Academy is led by Mr. Baker, a coach with over 30 years of experience at collegiate and high school levels and a background in education and sports science. The Academic Team includes trained tutors and some of Brentwood’s credentialed educators, and each tutor is hand-selected by the Extended Day Coordinator. The program uses age and ability groups for martial arts and basketball, including Freshmen, Juniors, Seniors and Novice, Intermediate, Advanced levels. Scholars Academy offers Youth Sports Programs, an Extended Day Program with academic support and structured sports and social activities, a Life Skills Development curriculum, Family Kickboxing for all ages, and a Kids Karate program. The program follows a whole-child philosophy that blends physical training with academic enrichment and social-emotional learning, uses individualized learning plans and flexible curriculum guided by each student’s pace, and includes support for students with ADHD or other learning challenges through patient and encouraging instruction. Its mission states that it aims to enrich the lives of members through competitive sports, fitness, academic assistance, after-school enrichment, life skills training, and seasonal camps, and to prepare students to act as responsible, respectful global citizens with a lifelong love of learning and tools for academic and emotional success. Mr. Baker and his staff are described as passionate about fostering a close-knit, family-like culture, with a focus on character building that includes courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, indomitable spirit, and compassion, and older students serving as mentors and role models for younger members. The program is described as going far beyond an average karate school or after-school program and serves families in Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Oakley, and Antioch.
