About

Swordplay LA is a modern combat academy where students train in fencing, stunt fighting, Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), pro-wrestling, film fighting weapons, hand-to-hand skills, and European swordsmanship. The program includes full contact sparring and athletic training, and it operates as a modern fencing, historical European martial arts, and performance combat studio rooted in discipline, athletic precision, and professional training. Swordplay LA serves athletes, actors, stunt performers, artists, filmmakers, and students who value mastery, realism, and refinement, and it offers an inclusive and welcoming community for combat and creative expression.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options are available on weekday mornings and evenings, plus daytime options on Saturdays and Sundays.

Swordplay LA offers a three-weapon fencing club with foil, epee, and sabre, along with a youth competitive fencing program for students looking to compete locally, regionally, and nationally. The Stunt Fighting curriculum offers a series of film fighting weapons and hand-to-hand classes for adult students and action actors, and this program also teaches set safety and etiquette and allows students to immerse themselves in fight choreography. The HEMA program is available to fencing and stunt students who want to supplement their training with full contact sparring, and HEMA youth classes are also available. The Pro-Wrestling Program tracks progress through skill milestones, technical mastery, and in-class performance through in-ring training. Programs at Swordplay LA emphasize speed, agility, and strength training and can add depth and authenticity to cosplay and RPG characters. The program offers a free class or free trial sign-up, a Discord community for Swordplayers, and an email newsletter for news and updates.

Swordplay LA’s mission is to empower individuals through a diverse range of programs, including a competitive fencing program, professional stunt fighting program, HEMA classes, and athletic training. Owner Mary Sola Spohn has over 20 years of experience in fencing, has earned multiple national medals, and received a NCAA Division 1 fencing scholarship. Mary has worked as a stunt actor, fight choreographer, and fight trainer specializing in onscreen European swords, fencing, and fight choreography, and has trained A-list celebrity talent, Academy Award–winning actors, Olympic athletes, and child film and television stars. Swordplay LA can also bring swordplay to outside events through its specialized entertainment teams.
