Montessori of Malibu Canyon provides preschool programs and services to children ages 2 to 6 and states that it focuses on learning and safety in a setting children enjoy. The program offers full-day and half-day options, a full-day preschool for toddlers and preschoolers, an Elementary Transition Program as a full-day kindergarten alternative for 5- and 6-year-olds, a preschool summer camp, and an 8-week Parent and Me program for children ages 12 to 24 months. The curriculum uses the work of Dr. Maria Montessori and takes an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf pedagogies, with activities that teach children about the arts, writing, and arithmetic while also including socialization and play. Kids’ learning activities include a diverse blend of experiences that build character, encourage growth, and promote a sense of community, and extended hours programs are available to make it easier for families to use the services.
The campus includes over an acre of flat playground space and large, open classrooms with brand new Montessori educational materials. Classrooms feature non-toxic BPA and lead-free furniture and paint made from North American maple wood, along with bright and cheerful spaces that create a safe, nurturing, and comfortable environment. Families receive personal access codes to the school. The program follows a green lifestyle by sterilizing and cleaning with green products every day and teaching students to wear separate inside shoes and outside shoes.
Teachers are carefully screened with background checks, have a BA or higher in early childhood development, hold Montessori certifications, and have extensive experience and certification. The leadership team includes founder Negin Ghaffari, M.P.A., Ph.D., and her husband Kevin, who is a pediatrician and neonatologist. The school follows the recommendations of both the American Montessori Society (www.amshq.org) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP.org). Dr. Ghaffari received the Prestigious Annenberg Doctoral Fellowship and funding from the Microsoft Corporation for a study on incorporating technology in education and has devoted countless hours to children through her partnership with various organizations, including the California Mini-Corps.
