About
Montessori of Malibu Canyon offers activities such as growing food in an organic garden, studying live animals, and comparing the local climate to other continents. The program also includes music, cooking, and yoga as part of its regular activities.
• Ages: 1–6 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
Montessori of Malibu Canyon follows an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates Montessori methods along with Reggio Emilia and Waldorf pedagogies. Its curriculum uses materials from around the world, includes art and music, and incorporates inspiration from the surrounding natural environment. The program offers full-day and half-day options for children between two and six years old, including a full-day preschool, a preschool summer camp, and an Elementary Transition Program as a full-day kindergarten alternative for 5- and 6-year-olds. It also offers an 8-week Parent and Me program for children ages 12 to 24 months and a variety of child development programs throughout the year.
The school states that it enriches Montessori education and uses the work of Dr. Maria Montessori in its approach. The interdisciplinary curriculum includes activities in the arts, writing, and arithmetic while also supporting socialization and play. Montessori of Malibu Canyon welcomes children from Calabasas and the surrounding area.
The program verifies teacher credentials and hires well-trained staff with a BA or higher in early childhood development and Montessori certifications, and all teachers are carefully screened with background checks. The school uses non-toxic BPA- and lead-free furniture and paint made from North American maple wood, sterilizes and cleans with green products every day, and teaches students to wear separate inside and outside shoes. Families receive personal access codes to the school, and the campus has cameras in the classroom and on the playground, along with protocols and supplies for emergencies.
Montessori of Malibu Canyon follows recommendations from the American Montessori Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Founder Negin Ghaffari, M.P.A., Ph.D., is a former teacher with more than 21 years of experience, holds a Master’s Degree in Administration and a Doctorate in Educational Studies from the Claremont Colleges, and received the Prestigious Annenberg Doctoral Fellowship. She has received funding from Microsoft Corporation for a study on incorporating technology in education and has devoted time to children through partnerships with organizations including the California Mini-Corps. Her husband Kevin is a pediatrician and neonatologist.
