About
Channel Islands YMCA Swim Team includes competitive swimming and focuses on developing swim skills. Swimmers work on improving and refining strokes, starts, turns, and finishes while building endurance, speed, and drill techniques. Program options include Barracudas Conditioning - Summer, Dolphin Swim Team - Bronze, and Dolphin Swim Team - Copper.
• Ages: 6–16 years old
• Schedule: Summer Barracudas Conditioning sessions run in two blocks (June 8–July 15 and July 20–August 26) with 50-minute practices offered Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at either 4:00–4:50 pm or 5:00–5:50 pm; Ventura Dolphin Swim Team Bronze and Copper groups run as a 9-month program from September through May with Bronze meeting Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 4:15–5:15 pm and Copper meeting Monday and Wednesday 5:30–6:15 pm.
• Price: Barracudas Conditioning - Summer: Member $115.00, Non-Member $160.00; Dolphin Swim Team Bronze: Member $96.00, Non-Member $138.00; Dolphin Swim Team Copper: Member $64.00, Non-Member $92.00.
The program includes a non-competitive Copper team that does not participate in swim meets and is for swimmers who have successfully completed Stage 6 / Stroke Mechanics to further develop their strokes and endurance before enrolling in the Bronze Swim Team group. All new swimmers are required to try out for the Bronze team, with tryouts including 100 yards freestyle, 25 yards backstroke, 25 yards breaststroke, 25 yards butterfly (attempted even if optional), and 1 minute of treading water. Equipment for Barracudas Conditioning includes goggles, while the Ventura Dolphin Swim Team Bronze and Copper groups require goggles and a swim suit, provide a swim cap to each new swimmer, and recommend swim fins. A Swim Team Parent & Swimmer Orientation is offered in person at the Ventura Family YMCA. The mission of the Channel Islands YMCA Swim Team states that joining the swim team helps kids build endurance, speed, and drill techniques with teamwork and sportsmanship, that trained swim coaches work with every child to improve swim skills for this competitive program, and that the teams focus on refining strokes, starts, turns, and finishes in a supportive and progressively challenging environment where swimmers train together as a team.
