Opus11 School of Music states that it offers a variety of programs to fit the needs of families, from individual lessons to group ensembles, and that all faculty share a love of music and community and provide a positive environment. The school’s stated goal is to create a custom and individualized lesson plan for each student and to pair each student with a teacher aligned with that student’s goals. The mission of Opus11 School of Music is to teach music in a way that is accessible and individualized, with the belief that neither age nor ability is a barrier to learning music and that students can enjoy music for a lifetime and pass that interest to their own children.
Opus11 School of Music was founded in August 2020 by Julie Poklewski and her husband, Alex Poklewski. Julie is the founder and principal instructor, and Alex co-founded the school together with her. Julie earned a B.M. degree in Piano Performance and an M.A. in Piano Pedagogy, has worked as a collaborative pianist with various choirs, musicals, and soloists including the Vivace Youth Chorus since 2003, served for six years as president of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Santa Clara Chapter, and is executive director of the San Jose International Piano Competition. Other faculty include Nate, a pianist and teacher with a background in worship music and contemporary styles who works with students who already read music; Ms. Natia, a graduate of Yaroslavl State University in Music and International Languages who has taught early childhood music classes for over 10 years; Erica, who holds a Graduate Performance Diploma and Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Longy School of Music of Bard College and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Conducting, and is an active member of MTAC, CAPMT, and MTNA; and Mr. Selmer, who earned his MM in Music Performance from San Jose State University in 2021.
Opus11 School of Music is an approved vendor for Ocean Grove IEM Charter School. The school reports that 100% of its students pass the Annual Certificate of Merit Exam, 90% are selected for CM Branch Honors and State Conventions, 100% pass CAPMT Piano Auditions, and 90% are selected for the CAPMT Northern California Festival.
Parent testimonials describe students enjoying piano lessons with Ms. Julie, noting that she creates a supportive rather than competitive learning environment, works with each student based on individual interests and pace, and introduces techniques such as articulations, breath, and pedal from the first lesson. Parents report that teachers at Opus11 School of Music make students feel comfortable, acknowledge their effort, and encourage them through more challenging material, and that they appreciate being able to observe lessons in the studio. Other parents describe Julie’s teaching style as keeping both kids and adults excited and motivated, and mention that she is organized in designing yearly classes, activities, and recitals and follows up each class with clear homework emails.
