In August of 2020, Julie Poklewski founded Opus11 School of Music together with her husband, Alex Poklewski. Julie is the founder and principal instructor, and Alex co-founded the school with her. The name Opus11 was inspired by the number 11, by music (Opus 11 is a set of preludes by composer Alexander Scriabin), and by the fact that Julie’s birthday is November 11.
Julie earned a B.M. degree in Piano Performance and an M.A. in Piano Pedagogy, has worked as a collaborative pianist with various choirs, musicals, and soloists including the Vivace Youth Chorus since 2003, and served for six years as president of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), Santa Clara Chapter. Within MTNA, she started several adult recitals and an emerging artists recital series, and she is executive director of the San Jose International Piano Competition. Mr. Selmer earned his MM in Music Performance from San Jose State University in 2021. Erica earned her Graduate Performance Diploma and Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Longy School of Music of Bard College, holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Conducting, graduated summa cum laude with departmental honors, and is an active member of MTAC, CAPMT, and MTNA. All Opus11 faculty share a love of music and community and provide a positive environment.
Opus11 School of Music states that it is passionate about teaching music in a way that is accessible and individualized, and that it believes neither age nor ability is a barrier to learning music. The school states that it wants everyone to have access to the joy of music for a lifetime and to pass that love down to their own children. Opus11 describes itself as the south bay area’s premier music school and states that it is committed to giving each student a life-long love for music for generations to come. The school offers a variety of programs from individual lessons to group ensembles, aims to create a custom and individualized lesson plan for each student, and states that its goal is for each student to become a connected member of the musical community and to achieve full musical potential. Opus11 states that students are not bound by a certain style of music or class structure, can practice classical or contemporary music, learn to play favorite songs by ear, and study theory and composition, and that it will pair each student with a teacher suited to that student’s goals. The school features brand new Kawai digital, acoustic, and hybrid pianos in every classroom.
Opus11 School of Music is an approved vendor for Ocean Grove IEM Charter School. The school reports that 100% of its students pass the Annual Certificate of Merit Exam, 90% of its students are selected for CM Branch Honors and State Conventions, 100% of its students pass CAPMT Piano Auditions, and 90% of its students are selected for the CAPMT Northern California Festival.
Parent testimonials describe students enjoying piano lessons with Ms. Julie, looking forward to lessons, and experiencing a supportive rather than competitive learning environment, with lessons that cover techniques such as articulations, breath, and pedal from the first lesson. Parents report that teachers at the studio make students feel comfortable, acknowledge their effort, and encourage them through more challenging material, and that they appreciate being able to observe lessons in a cozy studio. Other parents state that their families have been taking piano lessons with Julie for more than two years, that her teaching style keeps kids and adults motivated, and that they notice the piano being played constantly at home. One parent notes that Ms. Julie is cheerful, gives students options for what pieces they want to learn, communicates weekly homework clearly by email, and is organized in designing yearly classes, activities, and recitals.
