About
The Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop is an intentionally designed space where children may be curious, may experiment, and may construct for themselves an understanding of their environment and their relationships. At this cooperative early childhood program, children, parents, and teachers work and play together, learn from each other, and actively cultivate a strong, family-focused, and supportive community.
• Ages: 0–5 years old
• Schedule: Staff are available by email or phone from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday
• Price: Starting at only $200/month
The Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop states that structured and formal learning, forced too early, does not prepare children for a rapidly changing world and does not provide a solid conceptual foundation for future academic experiences. The program gives children time, space, open-ended materials, and support for their creative ideas, and it values mistakes as opportunities to learn. It encourages clear and compassionate communication and nurtures children’s respect for themselves along with concern for the well being of others. The program is organized as a non-profit, cooperative early childhood program whose foundation is parent education, and it is affiliated with and supported in part by the Santa Barbara City College School of Extended Learning. LGPCW is licensed by the state of California (License # 421710912). The program envisions a future shaped by nurtured children, reflective and effective parents, and a compassionate community, and it values collaboration, communication, play, and process within a purposeful environment.
An alumni parent reports that LGPCW provided an ideal environment for a mixed biological and adoptive family, where they learned how to parent with compassion and intentionality, and that their children healed and flourished within a play-based environment, gaining social skills and confidence vital to early development and future success. A current parent describes it as the “best place ever” and says they are learning a lot and that their child is better off.
