The Channel Islands YMCA traces its history in the region to 1887, when the YMCA was formed in Santa Barbara and Ventura. The first official Y building in Santa Barbara opened in 1912 and offered gymnasium classes, wrestling, boxing, handball, summer camps, hikes, athletics, swimming, and a variety of clubs and social services. The Ventura YMCA began on September 30, 1887, with a house purchased on the corner of Santa Clara and Oak Street. The organization reports that it has been listening and responding to critical social needs across San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties since 1887, involving volunteers, donors, leaders, and partners.
