Since 1992, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson has operated as an after-school option for youth. The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson is to offer young people a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves, dedicated adult mentors who respect and listen to them, and outcome-based programs that empower youth to become lifelong learners. The organization reports that it welcomes nearly 5,000 youth on any given day and offers programming during and after school in Carson, Gardena, Watts and South Los Angeles for youth ages 6–18 years old. It states that 97% of its youth live in poverty and that 54% of Club alumni report that Boys & Girls Clubs saved their life.
The leadership team includes CEO Kim Richards; VP of Development & Marketing Melissa Wickman; staff member Don Abbe, who joined the Club in 2010; and Nina, who joined in August 2022. The Board of Directors is led by President/Board Chair Jacquelyn Thomas, Vice President Shireese Johnson, Secretary Lori Henderson, and Treasurer Roger von Ting, along with multiple Board Members at Large, Regents, and Associates from community organizations and companies. Staff member Don Abbe has 35 years of experience in the private and nonprofit sector, including work with the YMCA of Greater Seattle and Habitat for Humanity Los Angeles, and holds a BS in Accounting and Business Management from the University of Washington. Nina received the National Newcomer Excellence Award in Resource Development in 2024 from Boys & Girls Clubs of America for her fundraising work.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson partners with community, corporate and foundation partners that invest in its programs, including organizations such as Los Angeles Football Club, City of Carson, Carson Companies, Raising Cane’s, Dignity Health Sports Park, NASCAR, Marathon Petroleum, AON Risk Services, Prologis, Mattel, Acrisure, Norm Wilson & Sons, Inc., The Carson Companies, AEG, Waste Management Inc., Tesoro (Retired), California Water Service, Watson Land Company, and City of Carson. Board members adopt one of the organization’s twenty-one club locations and serve as supportive partners to frontline staff. The organization notes that in-kind donations such as gently used books, business attire, art supplies, and new or used laptops save it thousands of dollars each year.
Enrollment requirements for the program include that the student must be enrolled in an LAUSD school during 2024–2025 and that a parent or guardian must submit one application per LAUSD student.
Member and alumni testimonials describe personal experiences at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson, including statements about feeling at home, creating new bonds, gaining confidence, and feeling supported by staff and programming. CEO Kim Richards states that the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers regularly focus on how to serve more kids with better programming and that they raise their goals each year. Board leader and alum Roger von Ting states that the Club was important to him as a child and that a strong board helps provide skills the organization needs.
