Castro Valley School of Music has been offering music, piano, guitar, voice, singing, and drum lessons year-round since 2013 and teaches over 300 students from ages 4 years old to adult. The school has three facilities, including a community center for students and families, a recital location with a grand piano and sound system, and many offices where individual private lessons take place. Picture day is held every six months with a professional photographer, and students can bring their instruments and wear whatever they like; adults are also welcome to picture day.
The school has 30 music teachers, all with either college training or over 10 years of professional performance experience, and over 20 instructors offer a variety of styles in any musical genre. The founder and president, Shane Sharkey, also referred to as founder and CEO, has 10 years of experience teaching elementary school music classes. Castro Valley School of Music offers ensemble opportunities that pair students with other students, Buddy Lessons for families to learn an instrument together, free theory classes that include ear training, rhythmic studies, and sight reading, and free, all-inclusive student showcases and biannual recitals in June and December where parents do not pay admission or related fees. The school offers morning and lunchtime lessons, including lessons as early as 9 a.m., with many students scheduled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and provides make up classes that never expire along with monthly, three-month, and six-month package options.
Students from Castro Valley School of Music have performed at the Marshall Music Festival and at events at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts, and the school also serves the communities of Hayward, Ashland, San Lorenzo, Fairview, San Leandro, and Sorenson. Castro Valley School of Music is described as Castro Valley's largest music school and Castro Valley's #1 choice for music lessons, with a proven track record of excellence since 2013 and over 300 students under one roof, which supports experimental projects and collaborations. One testimonial from Kimberly D. notes that her granddaughter enjoyed lessons with a teacher named Nate, describes the school as very well run with lots of space and fun things for youth, mentions the many offices where private lessons occur, and states that staff are professional and courteous.
