• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Jiu-Jitsu classes 6 days per week
Head coach and owner PJ Barch is described as one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors in the world, at the forefront of modern Jiu Jitsu, and a world-class competitor and instructor who coaches nearly every class and holds multiple open mats each week. Dawna Gonzales is described as an Eddie Bravo black belt, and the coaching staff is described as a group who still compete at the highest level. The program states that it offers a supportive, ego-free environment and is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for all students. 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu South Bay describes itself as the premier destination for No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the heart of the South Bay, with a state-of-the-art facility that has top-of-the-line equipment and amenities, a chill basement atmosphere, a lounge area, and lots of mat space. New students are offered a free intro class or free trial class, and all participants (or a parent or guardian for minors) are required to sign a waiver and release of liability before taking part in activities.
The program’s history describes how PJ Barch began forming 10th Planet Spring Valley in late 2016 and built a team of hundreds of students over the next four years. In early 2021, 10th Planet Spring Valley was disbanded, and within two months money was raised and a lease for a new space in Chula Vista was signed. During the next 6–7 months, PJ taught students for free in a backyard, and in under six months the team moved from Bonita to La Mesa, with support from long-time friend and coach Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez, Eddie Bravo black belt Dawna Gonzales, long-time student Daniel Melendez, and JJ at Alliance in La Mesa. The narrative describes students banding together to create an outdoor dojo at a student’s property and following PJ through multiple temporary locations, indicating a strong internal community.
Parent and student testimonials describe the gym as having classes for all ages, a chill basement atmosphere with lots of mat space, and a high concentration of top-tier talent to learn from. Families report that children look forward to coming to the gym every day, and several reviewers mention that coaches are kind, passionate, welcoming, and invested in members’ development. Multiple testimonials highlight that the instructors are proactive in helping female students, that beginners feel welcomed and see improvements in endurance, strength, and flexibility, and that the community is very welcoming on both the kids’ and adult sides.
