About

Compton Junior Equestrians is a youth horseback riding program that uses the majesty of the horse and the highly esteemed skill of horseback riding as its core activity. The program is dedicated to the essential core mission of keeping kids on horses and off the streets.

• Ages: 8–18 years old

Founded in 1988 as the Compton Jr. Posse and now named Compton Junior Equestrians, the program has focused on this mission for over 30 years. Its mission is to respond to the local need for programs available to at-risk and underserved youth in the Compton community by using horseback riding to inspire and provide a positive outlet for youth, while enriching the whole person through five core areas of growth: academic enrichment, career skills, mentorship, character building, and healthy and sustainable living. The program also works to combat negative and historically inaccurate narratives surrounding the city of Compton and pays homage to Black-Americans in western and equine heritage. Founder Mayisha Akbar started the original local horse program, and the Compton Cowboys are integral to the mission, participating directly in Compton Junior Equestrians programming on a daily basis, using their platform to amplify the program’s message and mission, and providing financial support.
