Academy of Martial Arts Shotokan offers instruction in karate that includes basic technique training (kihon), sparring (kumite), forms (kata), self-defense, and physical fitness. The program provides instruction in Karate led by a staff of expert instructors and managers.
Academy of Martial Arts Shotokan has been offering instruction and training in karate in the Bay Area since 1989. The program is a member of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), which is one of the largest Shotokan karate organizations in the world with more than 70 countries and over 75,000 members worldwide. Training at this program meets the highest standards in Shotokan karate training, and belt rank is recognized by ISKF clubs all over the world, so students can continue training at any ISKF club if they relocate to another state or country. ISKF offers weekend training camps taught by professional karate instructors, and all karate practitioners, regardless of affiliation, are welcome to participate at ISKF camps. ISKF holds an annual National karate tournament, and the ISKF World Shoto Cup Tournament and the ISKF Pan American Tournament are held every four years, alternating every two years. ISKF follows the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun principles created by Master Gichin Funakoshi. The Chairman and Chief Instructor of ISKF is Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki, 9th Dan. ISKF was established in 1977 by Shihan Teruyuki Okazaki, 10th Dan, a direct student of Master Gichin Funakoshi, founder of Shotokan Karate, and Shihan Yutaka Yaguchi, 9th Dan. Academy of Martial Arts Shotokan and the ISKF Northwest Region were honored in hosting in the Bay Area the 29th and 37th Annual ISKF National Karate Tournament in 2007 and 2015. Academy of Martial Arts Shotokan has produced champions in life as well as in the martial arts.
