About

Village Nursery School offers a play-based, child-centered curriculum where children take part in a daily “project of the day,” dancing and singing, water table play, playdough, blocks, art, and reading. The program includes free play outdoors, circle time with age-appropriate activities, a sharing circle, morning and afternoon snack times, lunch time, yard time, nap time or rest time, and afternoon activities. It is a parent cooperative preschool where families share in running the program and take turns assisting the professional teaching staff.

• Ages: 2–5 years old
• Schedule: Year-round program with half-day hours Monday–Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and full-day hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with early drop-off beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Village Nursery School is a small, parent cooperative serving families in Daly City and neighboring communities in San Francisco, Pacifica, Brisbane, and South San Francisco, and has served hundreds of diverse families over the last 70 years. It was established in 1953 and notes that it is celebrating 70 years as a co-op preschool. The program offers enrollment options for 3, 4, or 5 days a week, includes a short daily Pre-K instruction session for children the year before they enter Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten, and notes that children learn pre-academic skills in this Pre-K program. The school states that it strives to maintain an adult-to-child ratio of 1:4 and describes its care as guided by teachers, developmentally appropriate, and affordable.

Village Nursery School is licensed through the State of California Department of Social Services and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It states that it admits students of any race, color, national origin, ethnic origin, or religion and does not discriminate on these bases in administration of its educational and admission policies. The program describes having strict protocols to protect from COVID-19, following San Mateo County Health Department guidelines and safety strategies tailored to the community, and requires all students and participating parents to have all state-required immunizations up to date, with parents needing the COVID-19 vaccine to do work days at the school.

As a parent cooperative, Village Nursery School describes a strong community that builds connections and a parent support network, with active parent involvement that provides insights and lowers the child-teacher ratio. Parents work one morning per week at the school, attend monthly school meetings, and complete a minimum of 4 maintenance hours per semester for repairs and facility improvements, and the school notes that parents learn about many aspects of child development through this participation.
