About

The Bohart Museum of Entomology Summer Camp Program is part of the museum’s outreach programming and is connected to activities such as museum tours, classroom visits, and special weekend hours. The program takes place within a museum that is dedicated to teaching, research, and service and that offers a summer camp program as one of its educational options for children and families interested in terrestrial arthropods.

• Schedule: Walk-in hours for the museum are Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 1 pm–4:30 pm; research and university business are typically conducted Monday–Friday from 9:00 am–Noon and 1:00–5:00 pm.

The Bohart Museum of Entomology was founded in 1946 and holds more than seven million specimens of terrestrial and fresh water arthropods. The museum has the seventh largest insect collection in North America and is home to the California Insect Survey, which stores information on insect biodiversity from California’s deserts, mountains, coast, and the Great Central Valley. Its mission is “Understanding, documenting & communicating terrestrial arthropod diversity.”

The leadership team includes Jason Bond, PhD (Museum Director & Professor), Brennen Dyer (Curator & Collections Manager), and Tabatha Yang (Education and Outreach Coordinator). Additional staff and associates include Jason Bond, PhD, Museum Director & Professor; Fran Keller, PhD, Museum Scientist & Assistant Professor at Folsom Lake College; Tom Zavortink, PhD, Research Associate; Lynn Kimsey, PhD, Retired Museum Director & Professor; Steve Heydon, PhD, Retired Curator & Collections Manager; and Robbin Thorp, PhD.

The Bohart Museum has worked with a wide range of community organizations and programs, including AAUW (American Association of University Women), UC Davis Tech Trek camp, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, various homeschool groups, preschools, public libraries, adult day programs, and multiple schools in different cities. It has also partnered with groups such as the California Dept. of Food and Agriculture, California State Fair, Sacramento Children’s Museum, MOSAC (Museum of Science and Curiosity), World of Wonders Science Center, Yolo Basin Foundation, and numerous University of California, Davis groups as part of its outreach programming.
