About

The STUDY BUDDY Program pairs teens with elementary school students so they can mentor, tutor, and spend one-on-one time together. Each meeting includes STUDY time focused on schoolwork and BUDDY time for building friendship between the teen and the younger student.

• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: One hour, one day a week after school during the Spring and Fall semesters, usually on weekday afternoons; sessions are typically 40 minutes of STUDY time and 20 minutes of BUDDY time

San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth sponsors the STUDY BUDDY Program as one of its five youth prevention programs. High school students are recruited at their schools, complete STUDY BUDDY applications from their High School Counseling Offices or the San Dieguito Alliance website, and are sent to one of 22 school sites. High school students must sign a pledge that they are alcohol, tobacco and drug free before being accepted as mentors. Elementary school students are referred by their teachers based on academic, social or emotional benefit from mentoring, and usually about 18 pairs of mentors and pupils meet at each school site. Each school site’s program is supervised by two adult coordinators, and each site determines the breadth, scope and frequency of the program after assessing its priorities, academic challenges and school population.

The STUDY BUDDY program is sponsored by San Dieguito Alliance along with the Cardiff, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, and Solana Beach Elementary School Districts, the San Dieguito Union High School District, and their PTA/PTOs. San Dieguito Alliance is a collaboration with schools, parents and youth organizations, city councils, law enforcement agencies, businesses, chambers, civic groups and the faith community. The mission of San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth is to prevent or reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by youth in the cities of Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and the communities of Carmel Valley in the city of San Diego, La Costa in the city of Carlsbad, and the unincorporated areas of Elfin Forest, Fairbanks Ranch, and Rancho Santa Fe. The Program Director is Diane Grace.
