About

Amna Dance offers classes in Bollywood dance, Hip-Hop dance, Jazz dance, Jazz/Lyrical dance, and Latin dance. The program also includes Bollywood cardio and technical dance choreography as part of its curriculum. Its dance curriculum focuses on each of these styles every 6–8 weeks as students are prepared to perform at an annual dance recital.

• Ages: 3–18 years old

Founded in 2012, Amna Dance has grown from four students and one faculty member to over 200 students and over 13 faculty members across Southern California. The school describes itself as a dance school focused on creating All Around Dancers (AAD) through a unique curriculum that focuses on each dance style every 2 months. Amna Dance is led by Founder Amna Mazin and by Pinky Vora, who is the Owner of Amna Dance Los Angeles.

The program’s mission statement is “DANCE TO INSPIRE... is our company mantra,” and it states that it invites students to discover their expression, create the best version of themselves, and inspire the world around them. The mission further states that classes are non-competitive, nonjudgmental, kind, loving, tolerant, forgiving, and empowering, and that students are not involved in any competition with other groups or individuals. The philosophy described is to break through individual barriers by constantly outdoing one’s own limits, and to use dance as an art form that fosters growth physically, intellectually, and creatively.

Amna Dance highlights a focus on character as well as choreography, with mindful dance instruction that includes affirmations, goal-setting, and character building. Every class includes affirmations and mindfulness techniques. The program describes an “All Around Dancer” (AAD) approach so children can explore different styles before specializing, and it notes that AAD-Certified instructors are valued for their expertise in dance as well as their positive role in students’ education.

The Exploring Toddlers division is for kids ages 3–5. Youth + Teens classes (ages 7–17) include mindful techniques such as affirmations, goal-setting, meditation, and visualization. The Adult Ladies program (ages 18+) includes 15–30 minutes of non-stop dancing in the form of Bollywood cardio and 30 minutes of technical dance choreography, and no previous knowledge of dance or music is required for Adult Ladies classes. Weekly class videos are posted so students can practice from home.

Amna Dance states that it has a strict “No Child Gets Turned Away” policy. With this policy, when a child is sponsored, Amna Dance matches the sponsor’s contribution and covers any remaining tuition costs for local children. The program also states that every new student enrollment sponsors one orphaned child in Gaza, and that when a child enrolls to learn dance, another child receives support to survive.

Parent and student testimonials describe individual experiences with the program. One parent writes that a child progressed from “the first day crying to the recital” and that they were in tears seeing “how well she was molded.” Another parent notes that their child went from never agreeing to join any dancing groups to “never wanting to miss a single class.” Other testimonials describe the teaching as “a life style, not just a dance,” refer to “moulding young hearts through dance,” and mention feelings of love and belonging in class. One parent states that the teacher plays “the biggest role in shaping her life and inspiring her in so many ways” and that the teacher’s positive attitude and dedication help kids learn.
