Sunshine Montessori Preschool & Daycare offers engaging, hands-on learning experiences that integrate work and play, including gardening, cooking, moving gracefully, speaking politely, and engaging in social work in the community. Children take part in daily practical life experience, including taking care of themselves, each other, and the environment, and tidying up after their work as a daily routine and responsibility. Sunshine Montessori Preschool & Daycare is a home-based preschool with an entire home environment specially designed and structured to give many opportunities for young children to practice independence and responsibility, with all shelves, chairs, and tables child-sized and a proper place for everything that children are aware of. The program focuses on academics as well as character building, and developing a courageous personality is stated as being as important as excelling in academics. The mission of Sunshine Montessori Preschool & Daycare is to enrich children cognitively, emotionally, socially, and physically through quality educational learning experiences and fun meaningful play; equip children with true knowledge; involve parents in their children’s early learning journey towards new discoveries; satisfy children’s natural curiosity and develop a love of learning; and provide children with ample opportunities to socialize with others and explore the world in preparation for a purposeful and meaningful future. Parents are hoped to take an active part in the preschool’s programs and events and collaborate to make the children’s learning as meaningful as possible. The program states that mixed-age grouping and a welcoming environment build a sense of community and belonging, and that children are given the opportunity to grow from being the youngest in the class into leaders and mentors for their younger friends.
Classrooms are described as calm, respectful, and peaceful, providing an atmosphere to increase a child’s concentration. There are no grades or other forms of rewards or punishments, subtle or overt, and assessments are done through portfolios and teachers’ observations and record keeping. The program includes food and snacks, and they send pictures of children throughout the day.
Upon enrollment, families must file a health form signed by the child’s physician, and each child must have certain standard immunizations recorded, with the school to be notified of any allergies the child may have. The program also includes engaging in social work in the community as part of its activities. One parent shared that they chose Sunshine Montessori Preschool based on a friend’s recommendation, that their 6-year-old son attended, that they had “nothing but glowing things to say about Mrs. Asha and her Home-based Preschool program,” and that they appreciated that food and snacks are included and that pictures of their son are sent throughout the day.
