About
St. Raymond CYO Athletics offers basketball, cross country, track and field, and girls volleyball. The program includes a regular basketball season with 10 games plus a post-season for teams that make the playoffs, as well as a track and field season and a cross country program that uses assistant coaches at practices and meets.
• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: Basketball evaluations are held in early to mid-September, with season practices beginning the first week of October. The basketball season generally runs from late October to mid-February, with practices starting in October and generally held twice per week depending on gym space. Track and field season runs from early March through mid-May, with a registration deadline of Sunday 3/8 at 11:59 p.m. Assistant cross country coaches need availability for Monday practices and Friday meets.
• Price: The 2022–2023 basketball season fee is $325 per player, with discounts for three or more players in the same family. A $50 refund fee is assessed if a child is registered and does not meet eligibility requirements. No refunds are given after September 1 for those who registered on time, and a $50 fee is assessed for cancellations before the September 1 deadline. There is an additional $40 fee for the uniform shirt and shorts, which the child keeps and can use for multiple years. Track and field costs $125.
St. Raymond CYO Athletics is led by Athletic Director Tim Sbranti, who can be reached at [email protected]. The program is run by volunteers, including coaches, the board, and the athletic director, and parents interested in coaching are always needed. Registration is online only through the website, and financial assistance is available; those who receive financial assistance based solely on need are required to donate time to the league.
The parish sponsors the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) as one part of its ministry to youth and states that CYO programs serve the needs of all youth in the parish community. The mission of St. Raymond CYO Athletics states that it provides an athletic program for children and youth of the parish community and strives to enhance their spiritual, mental, and physical development. The mission also states that emphasis rests not on the number of games won or lost, but on participants’ attitudes in victory or defeat, that learning how to lose is just as important as learning how to win, and that learning how to win graciously is more important than winning itself. The mission further states that CYO programs enable the gifted to excel while giving all participants the opportunity to compete and improve their skills, that participants should respect others on their own team and opposing teams, and that they should show loyalty to CYO ideals, the parish, the coach, and the team. It also states that participants should learn patience with and tolerance of those of less ability, feel grateful to all who make the program happen, and have speech and actions that reflect Christian values while competing.
The mission statement notes that ultimate responsibility for the success of CYO programs lies with volunteer adult participants and that adults involved in CYO must remember the program exists for the Christian growth of young people. It states that adult conduct must always model Christian values and virtues and that when adults remain faithful to the Christian ideals of CYO, they exercise a unique and rewarding ministry to the young people with whom they come in contact. The program notes that CYO programs serve the needs of all youth in the parish community.
Eligibility to play basketball requires meeting at least one of the following: attending St. Raymond School, being enrolled in St. Raymond Faith Formation, or living within the St. Raymond Parish boundaries. St. Raymond Middle School girls volleyball eligibility requires attending St. Raymond School and being in grades 7 or 8. St. Raymond’s cross country program is seeking additional adults to register with the Diocese and volunteer as assistant coaches. For uniforms, there is an additional $40 fee for the shirt and shorts, which the child keeps and can use for multiple years, and returning players with uniforms are asked for their uniform number so the program does not duplicate numbers.
