Girls to Women is dedicated to supporting girls as they design their futures for successful womanhood. Girls to Women partners with Mid-Peninsula families, other local youth development agencies, and local schools to provide year-round programming which supports the healthy development of 75 low-income girls and young women ages 6 to 25, and families in San Mateo County's “East of Bayshore (East Palo Alto and Menlo Park's Belle Haven neighborhood)” community depend on Girls to Women for this programming. The Annual Margaret Wright Wellness 5K Run/Walk involves enthusiastic young people, Olympic athletes, local businesses, and San Francisco Bay open-space as a community-building event honoring a benefactor of Peninsula youth. Girls to Women is a registered tax-exempt public benefit nonprofit organization.

The program includes an Information Technology and “Maker” learning focus with activities ranging from coding to 3-D printing to carpentry and electronics, as well as arts programming that includes painting, drama, music, crafts, and face painting. It includes health, safety, and fitness activities such as sports, discussions with participants and their families, nutritional support and culinary classes, leadership building exercises, an annual 5K Run/Walk, mindfulness trainings, and field trips. The program emphasizes positive, culturally reflective female role models and uses girls’ unique attributes and “herstories” as cues to serve them and their families. Stated outcomes include optimizing mental and physical development, appreciation of the arts, competence with basic information technology, benefits of exposure to outdoors and natural areas, familiarity with and support from the local community, gaining a sense of potential as doers and leaders, and adult support and mentorship from well-prepared, motivated program staff and volunteers who retain their commitment over time. One testimonial shared by the program is, “I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by people around them.”
