StreetCode Academy was founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2016. Its mission is to bridge the digital divide by sharing the mindset, skills, and access people need to engage with technology and innovation. StreetCode teachers and mentors come from the community, and the program provides laptops and free courses for the community. Classes are accessible to students across the country, and StreetCode also supports adult learners in developing basic tech skills. StreetCode teaches students how to communicate with people in tech, tech companies, and the tech community, and it states a commitment to equality of opportunity and a prohibition on discrimination on many bases, including race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, gender identity, gender expression, disability, medical condition, pregnancy, age, marital or partnership status, sexual orientation, genetic information, and covered veteran status. StreetCode removes a barrier to entry in tech by bridging the gap between its community and Silicon Valley. StreetCode Academy has earned a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator and was named Nonprofit of the Year for California’s 13th Senate District in 2021.
Parents and students describe their experiences in several ways. One student said that after the first class, they felt it was confidence boosting and that they found their passion. A parent shared that their family chose to attend classes together rather than just dropping the kids off. Another student said they expected a typical class but instead appreciated the people, the vibe, and the positive and motivating energy, which led them to keep attending. A parent noted that their daughter worked on the 3D printer, made t-shirts, and that, because she loves arts and crafts, this class was a good fit for her and always offered something new.
