About

El Cerrito Cub Scout Pack 104 offers activities such as hikes, swim days, campouts, service projects, and special events throughout the year. Scouts take part in activities including a Huckleberry Preserve Hike, a self-guided nature path hike with learning about different plants and trees, Nerf Games IX: Ready, Aim, Knot! to learn knots and test Nerf skills, and multiple campouts such as a fall family campout at Berryessa Ecocamp, a spring campout at Samuel Taylor State Park, and a fall campout at the Sweetwood Group Camp at Half-Moon Bay with beach activities, fishing, and whale watching. The program also includes events like the Pinewood Derby at Camp Hermes where scouts race cars and compete in categories such as best scout spirit, best design, and best paint, an annual overnight at the California Academy of Sciences to explore and learn about the natural world and science, and a Blue and Gold banquet lunch potluck where every Den performs a skit and a cake auction raises funds for Pack activities.

Cub Pack 104 was established in 1961, and El Cerrito Cub Scout Pack 104 has been serving El Cerrito's youth for more than 60 years, with Scouting active in El Cerrito for over 80 years. The Pack is described as El Cerrito’s only Cub Scout Pack, one of the oldest continually operating Cub Scout Packs in the area, and has active Dens for Kindergarten (Lions), 1st grade (Tigers), 2nd grade (Wolves), 3rd grade (Bears), 4th grade (Webelos), and 5th grade (Webelos Arrow of Light). The Pack has an inclusive membership policy, and any child within the Cub Scout age range is welcome, and families are welcome to join summer outdoor activities and learn about Pack 104 before regular meetings resume in the fall.

The mission statement for El Cerrito Cub Scout Pack 104 states that Scouting provides a program for youth that builds character and personal fitness, provides fun and adventure outdoors, and instills boys and girls with the values, principles and skills to become tomorrow’s leaders. The Pack is chartered by Sycamore Church, and both Sycamore Church and Pack 104 are committed to the independence of Pack 104.

Summer 2024 activities include a Huckleberry Preserve Hike on Saturday, June 8 from 9:00 am–12:00 pm, a Swim Day at El Cerrito Pool on Saturday, June 22 from 12:30 pm–2:00 pm, and Wellness Trail Beautification with Urban Tilth on Saturday, June 29 from 10:00 am–2:00 pm. Additional Summer 2024 events include a Pack 104 booth at the WorldOne Festival at Cerrito Vista Park on Thursday, July 4 from 11:00 am–5:00 pm, a Train to Sacramento all-day trip on Saturday, July 13, Urban Tilth CleanUp Day Option 2 on Saturday, July 20 from 10:00 am–2:00 pm, a Camp Herms Service Project on Sunday, August 4 from 9:00 am–12:00 pm, Urban Tilth CleanUp Day Option 3 on Saturday, August 17 from 10:00 am–2:00 pm, a Big Rock Ridge Hike on Sunday, August 25 from 9:00 am–12:00 pm, Nerf Games IX: Ready, Aim, Knot! on Sunday, September 8 from 10:00 am–12:00 pm at Cerrito Vista Park, and a Fall Family Campout at Berryessa Ecocamp from Friday–Sunday, September 20–22.

Program activities also include swim-focused events such as Swim Day at El Cerrito Pool with the BSA Swim Test, a talk with a lifeguard about water safety, and family swim, along with swim day and rescue techniques practice. Hiking activities include exploring the Big Rock Trail at the Lucas Valley Preserve in Marin County during the Big Rock Ridge Hike and a Point Reyes hike on the Muddy Hollow trail, where participants take in scenery and wildlife and see elk. The first official pack meeting includes an adventure based on camping and the great outdoors.

Community service and involvement activities include Wellness Trail Beautification with Urban Tilth, helping clean and provide garden maintenance at Unity Park, and Urban Tilth CleanUp Days. Pack 104 members participate in the Golden Gate Area Council Scouting America’s annual Scouting for Food Drive by hanging door hangers requesting food donations and collecting and delivering food donations to local food banks. The El Cerrito Lions Club sponsors the placing of flags on veterans' graves at Sunset View Cemetery, in which Scouts and their families participate and attend a brief ceremony. The Pack also operates a booth at the WorldOne Festival at Cerrito Vista Park with kids’ activities at the booth, and overall Scouting in El Cerrito benefits from the resources of Camp Herms, described as a historic scout camp.

Additional traditions and events include caroling at El Cerrito Royale, a Camp Herms Service Project, and a Blue and Gold banquet lunch potluck at Camp Hermes where every Den performs a skit and an annual cake auction is held. For the Camp Herms Service Project on Sunday, August 4, families are asked to bring work gloves, sun protection, and water, and a breakfast snack and tools are provided.
