Oceanview Montessori was founded in 1994 by Ronna Brodsley, who had previously opened a small Montessori school in San Diego in 1989 and later relocated the school to the Oceanview area of Berkeley before moving it to its current city in the summer of 1999. Early in her career, Ronna studied under Dr. and Mrs. Claremont, who were students and contemporaries of Maria Montessori and came to America to establish a five-year Montessori Teacher Training program in Santa Monica that Ronna attended. Ronna retired in 2007 after more than 40 years of teaching, and her son Aaron took over ownership of the school and head teacher duties in 2007 and remains the director and head teacher.

The program states that staff guide children and direct their learning about different cultures in the world and the role that appreciation of diversity and cultural understanding play in promoting world peace. It states that all children deserve to be treated with respect and to be helped to achieve a strong sense of their own dignity and value, and that children need a stimulating, nurturing environment and a curriculum that will challenge and encourage independent thinking. The program states that it wants children to begin to understand that learning is a fulfilling, lifelong experience.

Oceanview Montessori is described as a small, family-run, community-centered preschool for ages 2.5–5.5 and as a small school that does not advertise because it typically remains full. One parent described the teachers as very attentive to the individual needs of each child and noted that the children are taught to interact with respect and to say “please” and “thank you” and wait their turn. Another parent reported that their child learned the seven continents within the first week at the school and described Aaron as having “an awesome way with children.” A parent whose child attended from 2018 to 2021 described Oceanview Montessori as a “wonderful, kind, caring and nurturing learning environment” and expressed pride that a place like this exists in the local community. Another parent reported that their child experienced an engaging and enriching experience over three years and that their child was able to read by the time of “graduating” from Oceanview.
