Lost Coast San Soo is described as a family-oriented martial arts school with a relaxed and laid-back environment that encourages entire families to join classes together. The school offers kids martial arts starting at age four, with game-based learning and a focus on developing kids life skills, and adult classes that emphasize learning by doing. Programs include Little Dragons for ages 4–6, Youth Kung Fu for ages 7–13, Adult Kung Fu for ages 13 and up, and Kickboxing for ages 13 and up. The program states that its goal is for students to get 1% better every day in an encouraging environment where growth is celebrated, and that the art is second to making students feel accomplished and positive after every class. Lost Coast San Soo notes that it is built on a foundation of community, support, and fun, and describes its space as welcoming, energetic, and safe for students to train. Military members, first responders, and students receive a 10% discount on memberships, and there is an intro offer of three classes for $20 with no commitment.
Owner and founder Master Tim Macias opened Lost Coast San Soo in August 2023, establishing Kung Fu San Soo and Kickboxing in Eureka and Northwest California. Master Tim began learning martial arts at age 17 in Riverside, California, training in American Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiujitsu, and Kung Fu San Soo at the Dave Hopkins Kung Fu San Soo Association. In 2012, he was awarded his Kung Fu black belt by Master Dave Hopkins, who is described as a 2006 Masters Hall of Fame inductee. After moving to Humboldt County in 2017, Tim trained at Humboldt Jiujitsu, became a brown belt, and served as the head striking instructor there. Over a 15-year martial arts career, he has demonstrated and taught across California and in Europe, trained with professional Kickboxers, MMA and Muay Thai fighters, and in 2019 was invited to train at the World Muay Alliance in Bangkok, Thailand, where he studied Muay Letrit fundamentals with Master General Tunwakom. Tim has taught team sports, martial arts, and yoga to students ranging from age 4 to adults in their 70s. In 2021, Master Dave Hopkins awarded him the rank of Master. Tim holds multiple Associate Degrees from Riverside City College, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California Polytechnic University, Pomona, and a Masters of Social Science from Humboldt State University’s Environment and Community program, earned in 2020.
Lost Coast San Soo states that it proudly provides martial arts to people in Eureka and nearby areas, including Arcata and McKinleyville. One Google review from Geoff Haynes describes Lost Coast San Soo as “a home away from home.” Another review from Curtis Hodge describes the environment as “a place of love, through hardship and sweat…through suffering you learn to become confident, tactical and sensitive to your surroundings.” A review from Jason Frederickson states that his strength, mobility, and awareness have greatly improved during his time at Lost Coast San Soo.
