About

Bike Adventures for Kids offers Spring After School Rides as part of its programming. The program is described as Fairfax's First Bike Camp.

• Schedule: Spring After School Rides

Bike Adventures for Kids was established in 2006, and Laura started the program 18 years ago. The program is women-owned and run. Laura Childress is the founder of Bike Adventures for Kids, a former head coach of the Drake Mountain Bike Team, and head coach for the Archie Williams Mountain Bike Team. Hannah Childress is the Head Coach of the Fairfax Fat Tire Flyers Mountain Bike Development Team and is a former racer and captain of the Drake High School Mountain Bike Team. Laura is a registered nurse and is Wilderness First Aid Certified. Hannah was honored with the NorCal Mountain Bike League's 2017 Achievement Award and has participated in several NorCal MTB Trail Stewardship Camps.

The program’s mission states that kids discover the endless possibilities for adventure in their own backyard and explore the best of Marin's outdoors by bike, with an emphasis on teamwork, confidence building, and bike handling. The mission also states that Laura believes riding bikes should be fun whether a child likes to shred or just take in the scenery. The program notes that many kids return year after year, first as campers and then as counselors, and that it provides kids with a safe and positive experience.

The program shares that Laura has been inspired by the dedication and perseverance of high schoolers as they train and race in all conditions and by the lasting influence these programs have in building grit and character. It also notes that Hannah has enjoyed being part of a mountain biking community and sees many of her campers join the NorCal MTB League at the middle school level and then move into high school competition and beyond.

Parent feedback includes comments such as a parent describing a summer camp week where two brothers at different skill levels each faced new challenges, polished riding skills, and enjoyed daily adventures, returning home exhausted and proud. Another parent calls it the “Best bike camp ever!!” A third parent reports that a child who started the week as a very tentative rider finished as a confident rider who loves to get on a bike and learned important safety and motivational lessons, and describes Laura as a great teacher and role model for a girl.
