About
Mount Hermon Outdoor Science offers students hands-on experiences such as creek exploration, time in redwood groves, visits to sand hills, pool play, and adventure activities. The program also includes a 1-day field trip in nature as part of its Outdoor Science experience.
• Ages: 10–12 years old
• Schedule: 4-day and 5-day sessions
• Price: Regular Season (Sept–Dec & Feb–May): 5-days $390 per student; 4-days $345 per student. Off Season (January): 5-days $320 per student; 4-days $305 per student.
Mount Hermon Outdoor Science includes three program options: Outdoor Science School, Private Christian Schools, and Day Field Trips. Outdoor Science School provides 5th and 6th grade science inquiry with curriculum designed to meet Next Generation Science Standards for 5th and 6th grades. The Private Christian Schools option offers an integrated worldview of Christianity and science. The program uses a relationship-based, Naturalist-centered approach, and an outstanding field guide is given to every student and each teacher who participates. Science test scores can improve up to 26% after an Outdoor Science Camp experience, and teachers and cabin leaders attend free of charge up to a given ratio. The Outdoor Science School has operated for decades and has reconnected students with the natural world while teaching solid science fundamentals. The program’s stated aim is to provide a loving environment where students can be themselves and grow in the areas of Stewardship, Character, Wonder of Nature, and Science Literacy while exploring creek exploration, redwood groves, sand hills, pool play, and adventure activities. The Outdoor Science School is led by OSS Director Gretchen Phillips.
Teachers describe the program as very enthusiastic and encouraging with all students, including students with special needs, and report that students go home happy and ready to return. Other teachers say the week’s activities and classes are well run and well planned, with learning and hands-on activities that are important for all learners. Additional feedback notes a strong combination of teambuilding and science content, with students enjoying the freedom of outdoor learning, getting their hands dirty, and eating plants. Teachers also report that the positive, approachable, and supportive staff make learning exciting and fun, and that students bloom and transform over the course of the week.
